More than 16 years after 3 Idiots became one of Hindi cinema's most enduring films, director Rajkumar Hirani has offered his clearest update yet on a sequel—confirming that the story is actively being developed and indicating that the original cast will return.
That puts Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor Khan in line to reunite for the follow-up to the 2009 blockbuster.
But there is an important qualification.
Hirani has not said that production is ready to begin immediately. The filmmaker stressed that the screenplay is still being written and that the project will move ahead only if the creative team is satisfied with the finished story.
“Kahani likhi jaa rahi hai (The story is being written), we are still writing. Once it reaches the right point, then we will talk about it,” Hirani said in an interview with ANI.
He then provided the update fans have been waiting for:
“Casting will be the same.”

Hirani's statement substantially strengthens expectations that the principal cast of 3 Idiots will reunite.

Story Wasn't Originally Written as ‘3 Idiots 2’

“Hum koi aur kahani likh rahe the phir aisa laga ki jo likh di hai voh iss second part par fit ho jayegi,” Hirani explained.
The revelation offers an important clue about Hirani's approach.
Rather than beginning with the commercial proposition of making 3 Idiots 2 and then searching for a plot, the filmmakers appear to have found a story that they believe could organically continue Rancho, Farhan and Raju's lives.
