Abhishek Bachchan Open to ‘Kajra Re 2.0’
More than two decades after “Kajra Re” became one of the most recognisable songs from Bunty Aur Babli, Abhishek Bachchan has said he would be happy to revisit the celebrated dance number.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Asian Network, Abhishek recalled the experience of filming the 2005 song with Aishwarya Rai and his father, Amitabh Bachchan.
When the possibility of a “Kajra Re 2.0” featuring the trio was raised, Abhishek responded enthusiastically, saying he would “love it” before joking that Aishwarya and his father would need to be convinced.
His comment was an expression of interest rather than confirmation of a new production. There has been no announcement in the cited reports that a remake or sequel to “Kajra Re” is officially being developed.
Abhishek Remembers the Shoot as a ‘Happy Party’
Abhishek's memories of the original production help explain why he remains enthusiastic about the song years later.
He recalled the filming as an unusually enjoyable experience, describing an atmosphere in which director Shaad Ali allowed the performers to dance freely while cameras captured their interactions.
According to Abhishek, the shoot took place around his birthday, adding to the celebratory mood on set. He recalled that the music played for hours as the performers danced, with some of those spontaneous moments eventually becoming part of the finished sequence.
Rather than remembering the shoot simply as another carefully choreographed Bollywood number, Abhishek described it as one of the most enjoyable song sequences he had worked on.
Why ‘Kajra Re’ Remains Memorable
“Kajra Re” appeared in Yash Raj Films' Bunty Aur Babli, released in May 2005.
The film starred Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji, with Amitabh Bachchan playing DCP Dashrath Singh. Aishwarya Rai made a special appearance in the song.
The track was composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, written by Gulzar and performed by Alisha Chinai, Shankar Mahadevan and Javed Ali, according to the official Yash Raj Films credits.
Its screen combination was particularly notable: Amitabh, Abhishek and Aishwarya appeared together in an energetic performance that became closely associated with the film.
Aishwarya and Abhishek later married in 2007, two years after Bunty Aur Babli was released.
A Song That Has Outlived Its Original Film Moment
The renewed discussion around “Kajra Re” demonstrates how successful film music can develop a cultural life extending well beyond its original theatrical release.
Songs from major Hindi films frequently reappear through weddings, live performances, streaming platforms, social media and nostalgia-driven entertainment content.
“Kajra Re” has similarly continued to attract attention long after 2005, while the combination of three prominent Bollywood personalities makes the possibility of a reunion especially notable for fans.
Abhishek's latest comments tap into that nostalgia without confirming that such a reunion will actually happen.
Could ‘Kajra Re 2.0’ Really Happen?
For now, the idea remains hypothetical.
Abhishek has clearly expressed willingness to participate, but the available reports contain no confirmation from Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Yash Raj Films or other relevant parties that a new version is planned.
That distinction matters because celebrity remarks about revisiting popular films or songs can quickly generate speculation about sequels and remakes.
At present, the news is not that “Kajra Re 2.0” is being made. Rather, Abhishek has indicated that he would welcome the opportunity if the original trio could reunite.
Nostalgia Continues to Shape Bollywood Conversation
The response to Abhishek's remarks also illustrates the continuing commercial and cultural value of nostalgia in Hindi cinema.
Familiar songs, characters and franchises allow studios and performers to reconnect with audiences who remember the original releases while introducing older material to younger viewers through digital platforms.
A new “Kajra Re,” if it were ever officially developed, would therefore carry considerable expectations because of the enduring popularity of the original.
Until such a project is announced, however, Abhishek's comments are best understood as an affectionate look back at a memorable shoot—and an enthusiastic answer to the possibility of bringing the trio together again.
