Suspected Grenade Explodes Near Manipur Congress Leader’s Home in Thoubal
Police in Manipur are investigating an explosion outside the residence of senior Congress legislator Keisham Meghachandra Singh, an attack that caused no injuries but has drawn condemnation from both the state government and the opposition.
The blast occurred at about 8:15 p.m. on September 3 near Singh’s home at Yairipok Bishnunaha in Thoubal district, under the jurisdiction of Yairipok police station. Singh, who leads the Congress Legislature Party in Manipur, was not at home at the time.
Initial accounts indicate that an unidentified person threw an explosive towards the property. Reports have described the device as a hand grenade or suspected grenade.
Police have not identified a suspect or announced a motive.
That leaves the circumstances of the attack open. While the Congress has described the explosion as an assault on democratic politics, investigators have not said whether Singh was targeted because of his political position or linked the incident to any individual or organisation.
Police begin search after blast
Security personnel reached the area after the explosion and searched the surrounding neighbourhood.
A senior police officer said investigators were still working to determine who was responsible.
“The identity and motive of the perpetrator are yet to be established,” the officer said.
The Chief Minister’s Office said an unidentified person hurled an explosive towards the western side of Singh’s residence at around 8:15 p.m.
No casualties were reported.
The absence of an established motive is central to the investigation. Political reactions have focused on Singh’s position as a senior opposition figure, but authorities have not publicly produced evidence showing why the residence was targeted.
Congress calls it an ‘attack on democracy’
The Manipur Congress condemned the explosion the following day and called for those responsible to be identified.
Senior party spokesperson Hareshwar Goswami described the incident as broader than an attack on an individual legislator.
“We take the bomb blast at the residence of the Congress legislature party leader as an attack on democracy,” Goswami said. “If there are different views, it should be negotiated and discussed peacefully.”
“We strongly condemn the attack. The attack is not just on Meghachandra but the Congress as a whole. Such things should not happen again,” he added.
The party has not claimed to know the motive.
Goswami suggested that those responsible “may have been instigated by someone,” but that remains an allegation. Police have not announced evidence connecting another person or group to the explosion.
Keeping those two accounts separate is important: Congress leaders see the incident through its political context, while investigators have yet to establish whether politics was the reason for the attack.
Chief minister orders investigation
Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh also condemned the explosion and directed police to conduct a thorough investigation.
He said “such acts of violence against elected representatives are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
The chief minister called for swift action to identify those responsible.
The response puts the government and the opposition on common ground over the immediate issue of accountability, even as the motive remains unknown.
For investigators, identifying the person who threw the explosive is only part of the task. They will also need to determine whether the attacker acted alone, whether others were involved and why Singh’s residence was chosen.
Local women object to violence in residential neighbourhood
The blast has also unsettled residents of Yairipok Bishnunaha.
Members of the Meira Paibi, Manipur’s prominent women-led community movement, condemned the explosion and focused on the danger of using explosives in an inhabited area.
“We, the Meira Paibi (womenfolk body) of Yairipok Bishnunaha, strongly condemn the bomb blast in the residential area,” a local woman said.
“Such acts of violence are unacceptable at a time when people of the state have already been suffering for the past few years.”
The reaction adds a different dimension to the political condemnations. Whatever the eventual motive, the explosive was detonated in a residential neighbourhood where the consequences could have extended beyond the intended target.
Meghachandra is a senior Congress figure in Manipur
Keisham Meghachandra Singh represents the Wangkhem Assembly constituency and serves as leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the state.
His political standing has inevitably shaped the response to the explosion. Congress leaders have treated the attack as an attempt to intimidate the party, while the chief minister has condemned violence directed at elected representatives.
Those reactions do not, however, establish why the blast occurred.
Until investigators identify a suspect or produce evidence of a motive, the most significant unanswered question is whether Singh was targeted for political reasons or for circumstances unrelated to his public role.
For now, the established facts are narrower: an explosive believed to be a grenade detonated near his residence, Singh was away at the time, nobody was injured and police are searching for whoever was responsible.
