Sports Ministry Approves 246 Support Staff for India’s Asian Games Campaign
India's preparations for the 2026 Asian Games have moved into their final phase, with the Sports Ministry approving 246 team officials, coaches and support personnel to accompany the country's 503 athletes to Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
The latest clearance takes India's overall delegation to 768 members, comprising 503 athletes, 246 team officials and support staff, and another 19 contingent officials.
The 20th Asian Games will begin on September 19 and continue until October 4, 2026, with India now set to compete across 36 disciplines.
India’s Athlete Count Rises From 492 to 503
The Sports Ministry had initially approved 492 athletes across 35 disciplines, but the final number has increased to 503 following the addition of competitors, primarily in athletics, along with the inclusion of surfing.
The revised contingent consists of 269 male and 234 female athletes.
Athletics has expanded from 73 to 79 competitors, while four surfers have also been approved, taking India's participation to 36 disciplines.
The enlarged athlete contingent is notable because it follows a period of scrutiny around India's Asian Games selection criteria, with the ministry applying performance standards while finalising entries.
Athletics Gets Largest Support Team
Athletics will have the largest support operation among India's teams.
The 79-member athletics squad has been allocated 31 support personnel, including 20 coaches led by national coach P Radhakrishnan.
The New Indian Express reports that the athletics support group also includes three physiotherapists, four masseurs and one medical officer among the 31 approved personnel.
The sizeable allocation means India's track-and-field operation alone will consist of approximately 110 athletes and support personnel.
That level of support reflects athletics' importance to India's medal campaign, even though one of the country's biggest names will be absent.
Neeraj Chopra to Miss Asian Games
India will compete without javelin superstar Neeraj Chopra, who is missing the Games because of injury.
His absence removes one of India's most established international medal contenders from the athletics squad.
However, Hindustan Times reported that Chopra's coach and physiotherapist were included among the personnel cleared for the Games.
The final athletics list has also expanded with additional athletes across several events as India strengthens the squad ahead of the continental competition.
Cricket Gets 20-Member Support Staff Led by VVS Laxman
Cricket will have one of the largest support teams outside athletics.
The Sports Ministry has approved 20 support personnel for India's two cricket teams, with VVS Laxman spearheading the group.
According to The New Indian Express, the cricket support contingent includes coaches VVS Laxman, Sunil Joshi, Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Amol Majumdar.
The publication reports that cricket has been granted a relaxation from the usual one-third support-staff policy, with the approved 20 comprising 14 coaches, five medical personnel and one team manager.
The arrangement covers both Indian cricket teams participating at the Games.
19 Additional Contingent Officials Take Total to 768
Beyond the 503 athletes and 246 team officials and support staff, India's delegation includes another 19 contingent staff members.
They include Chef de Mission Sahdev Yadav and Chief Medical Officer Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala.
The arithmetic puts the final approved Indian delegation at:
503 athletes + 246 team officials/support staff + 19 contingent staff = 768 members.
The scale of the delegation demonstrates that an Asian Games campaign involves substantially more than the athletes competing on the field. Coaches, physiotherapists, doctors, masseurs, managers and technical personnel all form part of the performance infrastructure around the teams.
India to Compete Across 36 Disciplines
India's participation has expanded to 36 disciplines, up from the 35 covered in the ministry's earlier athlete approval.
Surfing accounts for the additional discipline, with four surfers now cleared to compete.
The expansion also illustrates how the final composition of a major multi-sport delegation can change after an initial list is announced, as qualification positions, entries and administrative approvals are resolved.
The Aichi-Nagoya Games themselves are set to be unusually large.
More than 17,000 athletes and officials had registered for the Games, exceeding the 15,000 participants originally anticipated in the host-city agreement. Organisers and the Olympic Council of Asia have said accommodation has nevertheless been secured.
India Heads to Japan After Historic Hangzhou Campaign
The 2026 Games will inevitably be measured against India's performance at Hangzhou.
At the 2022 Asian Games, held in 2023 because of the pandemic-related postponement, India produced its best-ever Asian Games performance with 107 medals — 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze.
India finished fourth in the overall medal table.
The athlete delegation in Hangzhou was also considerably larger. The New Indian Express reports that 661 Indian athletes — 333 men and 328 women — participated in the previous edition, compared with 503 approved for Aichi-Nagoya.
The smaller 2026 athlete contingent therefore places greater focus on how effectively India converts its selected entries into medals.
Support Staff Could Be Crucial to India’s Medal Campaign
The approval of 246 support personnel is not merely an administrative detail.
At a multi-sport event running for more than two weeks, athletes require coaching, recovery, physiotherapy, medical care, nutrition management and competition-specific technical support. The requirements become particularly demanding for large teams such as athletics and for athletes competing through multiple rounds.
The distribution of support staff therefore provides another indication of where India's preparation resources are being concentrated.
Athletics leads with 31 support personnel, while the two cricket teams together receive 20. The overall delegation will also have central medical and administrative personnel coordinating operations across disciplines.
With the final contingent now substantially settled, attention shifts from selection and administrative clearances to performance.
India arrives in Japan carrying the benchmark of its record 107-medal Hangzhou campaign. Whether a smaller athlete contingent can approach that total will depend not only on the competitors selected but also on how effectively the extensive coaching, medical and performance-support structure around them operates.
