India Claim Historic Sepak Takraw Bronze at Asian Games
Aichi-Nagoya, October 2, 2026: India’s men’s sepak takraw team finished its Asian Games 2026 quadrant campaign with a bronze medal, after hosts Japan defeated the Indian side in Friday’s semifinal.
Japan won the contest in straight sets, 15-12, 15-13, to record a 2-0 victory and advance to the final. India remained competitive in both sets but could not turn key points into a comeback at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Gymnasium.
Despite the semifinal defeat, the bronze represents a significant milestone: it is India’s first Asian Games medal in the men’s quadrant event.
India Entered Semifinals Unbeaten
India’s medal-winning campaign was built on an impressive preliminary-round performance.
The team finished top of Group A, winning all three of its matches. India defeated Laos 2-0 and Vietnam 2-0 before overcoming Myanmar 2-1. Myanmar entered the tournament as World Cup champions, making that result an important part of India’s path to the semifinals.
Those victories guaranteed India at least a bronze once it qualified for the last four.
Japan, meanwhile, had finished second in Group B before meeting India in the semifinal.
Akash Yumnam Leads India's Medal-Winning Squad
Veteran Akash Yumnam was among the central figures in the Indian campaign.
The six-member squad that reached the semifinals consisted of Akash Yumnam, Bobby Kumar, Malemnganba Singh Sorokhaibam, Lokhon Singh Elangbam, Ram Kumar Sharma and Arun.
Yumnam and Malemnganba also featured in the Indian squad that won a men's team regu bronze at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, giving them experience of India's earlier breakthrough in the sport.
For Yumnam, the latest achievement is particularly notable. The Manipuri athlete is competing at his fourth Asian Games, according to Times of India, and his sporting journey has included working as a daily-wage labourer while continuing to train.
Why This Bronze Is Historic
India has previously won Asian Games medals in sepak takraw, but not in the men's quadrant competition.
The country won a men’s team regu bronze at Jakarta 2018, while its women also reached the Asian Games podium in the regu discipline at the previous edition. The Aichi-Nagoya result therefore expands India's medal record into another format of the sport.
The distinction between formats is important. In the quadrant event, four players from each side compete on court, unlike the traditional regu format involving three.
That makes Friday's result a new milestone rather than simply a repeat of India's earlier sepak takraw bronze medals.
Japan Ends India's Unbeaten Run
India entered the semifinal carrying momentum from its unbeaten group campaign, but Japan proved more effective at the decisive moments.
The hosts edged the first set 15-12. India pushed Japan even closer in the second, but the home side held on for a 15-13 victory to complete the match in straight sets.
The narrow scorelines show that India remained within striking distance, but Japan ultimately converted enough of the crucial exchanges to progress.
For India, the defeat ended the possibility of reaching the gold-medal contest, but the semifinal appearance itself ensured the historic bronze.
A Boost for Sepak Takraw in India
Sepak takraw remains considerably less prominent in India than cricket, hockey, badminton or wrestling, but Asian Games medals can play an important role in increasing a sport’s visibility.
India's 2018 men's regu bronze demonstrated that the country could compete for continental medals in the discipline. The latest quadrant medal broadens that record and suggests that Indian competitiveness is no longer confined to a single sepak takraw format.
At the same time, one medal should not be treated as proof that India has closed the gap with Asia's traditional sepak takraw powers. Countries across Southeast Asia, along with increasingly competitive East Asian teams, continue to provide formidable opposition.
The more meaningful test will be whether India can turn occasional podium finishes into consistent performances across Asian and world-level competitions.
India Add Another Medal at Aichi-Nagoya 2026
The sepak takraw bronze came during another busy medal day for India at the 2026 Asian Games.
At the point the result was recorded, it was reported as India's 72nd medal of the Games, with the tally standing at 12 gold, 25 silver and 35 bronze. The total continued to change later in the day as Indian athletes competed in additional medal events.
That timing qualification is important because Asian Games medal tables can change several times during a competition day.
For Indian sepak takraw, however, the achievement is already settled: the men's quadrant team leaves Aichi-Nagoya with its first Asian Games medal in the event.
