The Duleep Trophy 2026-27 reaches its decisive stage in Chennai, where East Zone and South Zone began their five-day final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, September 6.
East Zone captain Ishan Kishan won the toss and elected to bat first, putting his side in control of the first decision of a contest scheduled to run through September 10. The match began at 9:30 AM IST.
The final brings together two teams with different recent histories in the competition. East Zone are chasing their first Duleep Trophy title since 2012-13, while South Zone are looking to add to a record that already includes 12 titles, most recently in 2023.
East Zone Return to Familiar Ground
Chennai carries particular significance for East Zone.
Their most recent Duleep Trophy triumph came at the same venue in the 2012-13 season, when they secured the title against Central Zone on the basis of a first-innings lead after the match ended in a draw. East scored 232 before dismissing Central for 189, establishing the advantage that ultimately decided the final.
More than a decade later, East return to Chepauk with another opportunity to lift the trophy.
Their route to the 2026-27 final included a four-wicket semifinal victory over defending champions Central Zone. After the teams had both made 266 in their first innings, East's bowlers dismissed Central for 158 in the second innings.
Mohammed Shami and Mukesh Kumar played key roles with the ball, while Kishan held the chase together with an unbeaten 39 as East successfully pursued a target of 159. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also contributed a brisk 40 at the top of the order.
South Zone Arrive After Convincing Semifinal Win
South Zone secured their place in the title match with a seven-wicket semifinal victory over North Zone.
Captain Tilak Varma was central to that performance, scoring an unbeaten 116 in the first innings to give South control of the contest.
The final squad has also been strengthened by the availability of India internationals Mohammed Siraj and Devdutt Padikkal. Both were confirmed for the Chennai contest after featuring in India's Test series against Sri Lanka.
KL Rahul, however, is unavailable for the final.
That leaves South with a combination of established domestic performers and international experience as they pursue another Duleep Trophy crown.
Sooryavanshi, Kishan and Shami Add Intrigue for East Zone
One of the major attractions in the final is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose aggressive batting has made him one of the players to watch in the tournament.
East also have considerable experience around him. Kishan provides international pedigree and aggressive middle-order batting, while Shami and Mukesh give the side a proven pace combination.
For Shami, the final also represents another important appearance in his domestic campaign, with his experience giving East a significant weapon against a strong South batting order.
Siraj Strengthens South Zone Attack
The presence of Mohammed Siraj changes the complexion of South Zone's bowling unit.
Facing an East batting order containing Sooryavanshi, Abhimanyu Easwaran and Kishan, South have an international-level fast bowler capable of making an impact with the new ball as well as during longer spells.
Padikkal's inclusion similarly strengthens the batting options available to Tilak.
The result is a final containing several players with international experience alongside emerging domestic prospects — a combination that gives the match significance beyond the trophy itself.
National selectors, including chairman Ajit Agarkar, are expected to monitor performances, with upcoming India A assignments providing another incentive for players pushing their case for higher honours.
Why the Final Is Being Played in Chennai
The Board of Control for Cricket in India shifted the final from its Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru to the MA Chidambaram Stadium specifically to allow spectators to attend the tournament's marquee match.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the Duleep Trophy carries an important place in India's first-class calendar and that moving the final would give supporters an opportunity to watch the contest from the stands.
The board also expanded broadcast coverage of the competition.
Unlike the earlier four-day matches in the tournament, the final is scheduled across five days, from September 6 to September 10.
