Selectors Want Rahul, Siraj and Padikkal in Duleep Trophy Final as India Stars Return to Domestic Cricket
India's selectors want KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj and Devdutt Padikkal back in domestic cricket rather than waiting several weeks for their next international assignment.
The three have been asked to turn out for South Zone in the Duleep Trophy final against East Zone, beginning September 6 in Chennai. The move gives South Zone a significant injection of international experience for the title clash while also serving a broader selection policy: players without immediate India commitments should remain in competitive cricket when domestic fixtures are available.
All three last played on August 27. Rahul and Siraj are next scheduled to be involved when India face the West Indies in the ODI series beginning September 27, while Padikkal is not part of that ODI squad.
For Padikkal, an India A assignment could also follow.
Selectors want available India players on the field
The thinking behind the request is straightforward.
“Rahul, Padikkal and Siraj do not have any competitive cricket right now,” a BCCI source familiar with the development told PTI.
The source said the national selectors want India players to feature in the Duleep Trophy final when they are available, rather than spend the gap between international assignments without match practice.
“The trio played last on August 27. The next they will play is September 27 against West Indies in the ODIs,” the source said.
Padikkal's schedule is slightly different because he is not part of India's ODI plans against the West Indies.
“Now Padikkal is not a part of ODIs so he might play India A series. But Duleep final if there is a chance, they should play,” the source added.
The comments were made by an unnamed BCCI source and should therefore be understood as an explanation of the selectors' thinking rather than a formal public statement from the board.
South Zone gains three established India players
From South Zone's perspective, the additions could substantially alter the balance of the final.
Rahul brings extensive international experience and another top-order option. Padikkal arrives after his recent performances for India in Sri Lanka, while Siraj adds a proven fast bowler to the attack.
Their involvement also raises the competitive level of a final already featuring players pushing for national selection.
The match is scheduled to begin on September 6 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, with South Zone facing East Zone for the title.
East Zone booked its place by defeating defending champions Central Zone by four wickets in the semifinal. South Zone, led by Tilak Varma, advanced to set up the Chennai contest.
Tilak, Ishan and Sooryavanshi face a different decision
The situation is less straightforward for Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
All three are part of India's T20I set-up, creating a potential clash between the Duleep Trophy final and preparations for their international assignment.
Their participation is expected to depend on India head coach Gautam Gambhir.
The Indian squad is due to assemble in Delhi on either September 9 or 10. That leaves enough time, in theory, for the players to participate in at least part of the domestic schedule before joining the national side, but the final decision will depend on how Gambhir wants to structure India's preparations.
“If head coach wants all three to report as per T20I team's itinerary, then the trio can't play,” the BCCI source told PTI.
There is another possibility.
If Gambhir is comfortable with them joining the national camp later, the three could play the final and report in Delhi on the evening of September 10.
The distinction is important. Rahul, Siraj and Padikkal have been asked to play because they do not face the same immediate T20I scheduling issue. The availability of Tilak, Kishan and Sooryavanshi remains dependent on the national team's plans.
Ajit Agarkar set to watch the final
The match will also carry additional significance for players trying to move closer to the India set-up.
Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar is expected to be in Chennai to watch the final.
His presence gives fringe and emerging players a valuable opportunity to perform directly in front of the head of India's selection committee, while established internationals will also have competitive first-class cricket in which to maintain form.
Agarkar's own position has recently attracted attention. His current contract is due to expire on October 4, and questions remain around a possible extension.
He had been excused from an important BCCI review meeting because of family commitments. Whether BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia discusses his contract situation with him during the Chennai visit has not been confirmed.
That administrative issue is separate from his role at the Duleep Trophy final.
Domestic cricket remains part of India's selection picture
The request to Rahul, Siraj and Padikkal fits a broader push to keep India's leading players connected with domestic cricket whenever their international schedules permit.
For established internationals, the value is largely competitive. Training sessions can maintain fitness and technique, but they cannot fully reproduce the demands of a first-class match.
For selectors, their presence has another benefit. It allows emerging domestic players to compete alongside and against cricketers operating at Test and international level.
The Duleep Trophy is particularly useful in that respect because it concentrates leading players from different parts of the country into a relatively small number of first-class matches.
The Chennai final could now offer exactly that mix.
South Zone stands to add Rahul, Padikkal and Siraj, while East Zone has players including Kishan and Sooryavanshi whose availability will be determined by India's T20I schedule.
BCCI also plans Asian Games net-bowling support
Separately, the BCCI is working on plans to send Mayank Yadav, Kartik Tyagi and Mohsin Khan to Japan as net bowlers for India's men's team at the Asian Games.
The move has been requested by head coach VVS Laxman, according to the PTI report.
The three fast bowlers would not be members of India's official Asian Games contingent. Instead, they would assist during training and remain with the squad only until India's men begin their campaign on September 26.
There is still a logistical hurdle.
The BCCI needs to secure Japanese visas for the trio before the Indian team is scheduled to leave Delhi on September 20.
A final with significance beyond the trophy
For South Zone, bringing Rahul, Padikkal and Siraj into the side would strengthen its chances of winning the Duleep Trophy.
For India's selectors, the match serves a different purpose.
The trio have a month between their most recent competitive appearance on August 27 and the start of India's ODI series against West Indies on September 27. Using part of that period for a high-level first-class match gives them competitive cricket while placing some of India's leading players back into the domestic structure.
The final could also provide an unusually concentrated selection opportunity. Agarkar is expected to watch from Chennai, established internationals are being encouraged to participate, and several younger players have the chance to make their case alongside them.
The remaining uncertainty concerns India's T20I players.
Whether Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi join the final will depend on Gambhir's plans for the national squad. Rahul, Siraj and Padikkal, meanwhile, have received a clear message from the selectors: if they are available, they should be playing.
