ARC Secures Fresh Capital for Its Hardware Push
ARC has raised ₹10.5 crore in pre-seed funding as the Indian gaming startup prepares to move its first handheld device from development towards commercial production.
Chimera VC and MIXI Global Investments led the round. Dhruv Vohra, Director at Meta for the APAC region, also participated in his personal capacity.
For ARC, the immediate priority is the X1, a portable gaming device being developed around Qualcomm technology. The company plans to use the new funding across engineering, product validation, manufacturing readiness and supply-chain work.
But the startup is not treating the X1 as a standalone hardware product. Alongside the device, ARC is developing OWL OS, its own gaming-focused operating system, as part of a broader attempt to control more of the experience between hardware, software and games.
Building the X1 Around a Gaming-First Software Experience
The X1 uses an ARM-based architecture and runs OWL OS, which ARC has built on the Android Open Source Project.
The operating system is intended to offer controller-first navigation rather than the touchscreen-led experience associated with conventional Android devices. ARC is also developing its software stack to support different forms of gaming, including native Android titles, PC-game compatibility and cloud gaming.
Those ambitions will face a practical test once the device reaches consumers. Compatibility, software stability, battery life and sustained performance will matter as much as the specifications ARC puts on paper.
The company has not yet established those capabilities through a widely available commercial product, so its broader platform plans remain separate from what buyers will ultimately be able to evaluate themselves.
ARC Is Taking a More Integrated Approach
Founders Jobin Joseph and Kaustubh K. Jadhav are pursuing a strategy that goes beyond sourcing an existing handheld and adapting it for the Indian market.
ARC says it is developing both its hardware and software stack, giving the company greater control over how the X1, OWL OS and related gaming services work together.
That approach offers potential advantages, but it also adds complexity. Hardware engineering, software development, component sourcing, manufacturing and consumer support all have to work reliably for the final product to succeed.
The new capital will help ARC prepare for that transition. In addition to product and manufacturing work, the company plans to expand its team, strengthen go-to-market operations and pursue partnerships across gaming, cloud services, content and technology.
More Than 50,000 Users Have Joined the Waitlist
ARC says more than 50,000 people have registered for the X1 waitlist ahead of its commercial availability.
The figure points to early interest in the product, though registrations are not the same as paid orders and should not be read as confirmed sales.
ARC has also been bringing prospective users into the development process. The company announced a pre-launch beta programme in July, allowing selected gamers to test the X1 and provide feedback before its wider release.
For a new hardware company, that feedback can be particularly useful. Problems involving controls, software navigation, game compatibility or thermal performance can be difficult to judge solely through internal testing.
Qualcomm Technology Sits at the Centre of the Device
ARC has been working with Qualcomm Technologies as it develops the X1 and its wider hardware roadmap.
The choice of an ARM-based platform reflects one of the central engineering challenges facing portable gaming devices: delivering sufficient performance without sacrificing battery life or creating excessive heat.
Qualcomm's technology gives ARC an established mobile computing platform to build around, but the processor alone will not determine whether the X1 finds a market.
Pricing will be crucial. So will the range of games users can actually play, the quality of OWL OS, battery performance, distribution and after-sales service.
Those factors are especially important for a new consumer electronics brand trying to persuade buyers to invest in a dedicated gaming device.
Why ARC Sees an Opening in India
India already has a large gaming audience, but smartphones account for much of that activity. Dedicated consoles and gaming PCs typically require a considerably larger upfront investment.
ARC is positioning the X1 between those categories, aiming to offer a dedicated portable gaming experience without relying on the economics of a traditional high-end gaming PC or console setup.
The opportunity is straightforward to identify but harder to capture.
A dedicated handheld has to offer enough value beyond a smartphone to justify another device. At the same time, it must remain affordable enough to appeal to consumers who may find established gaming hardware expensive.
ARC's software strategy could therefore prove as important as the hardware itself. A handheld with access to Android games, compatible PC titles and cloud gaming could broaden the available catalogue, provided those experiences work consistently in everyday use.
Funding Brings ARC to a More Demanding Stage
The ₹10.5 crore round gives ARC additional resources at a point when the company's priorities are shifting.
Early engineering and product concepts now have to translate into manufacturing, supply chains and a device that customers can buy and use reliably.
ARC enters that phase with more than 50,000 reported waitlist registrations, its own operating system and a technology relationship with Qualcomm. The funding provides room to develop those pieces further.
The more important measure will come with commercial execution: whether ARC can turn its integrated hardware-and-software approach into a handheld that competes on price, performance and usability.
For the company, the X1 is the first test of a larger idea. ARC wants to build not just a gaming device, but an Indian gaming technology platform spanning hardware, operating systems and software services.
