Mirzapur’s Big-Screen Gamble Is Already Raising the Next Question
Mirzapur spent years building its audience on streaming. Less than two weeks after making the jump to cinemas, the franchise is already confronting a very different question: should it stay on the big screen?
Mirzapur: The Movie, released on September 4, has crossed ₹180 crore net in India during its theatrical run, according to current box-office reporting. The commercial response has now prompted discussions around a second film, tentatively being referred to in reports as Mirzapur: The Movie 2.
Director Gurmmeet Singh, franchise creator and writer Puneet Krishna and members of the cast are reportedly expected to meet producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani to discuss the possibility.
There is, however, an important distinction for fans: Part 2 has not been formally announced yet.
How Much Has ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ Earned?
The film's theatrical performance explains why sequel conversations have accelerated.
Current box-office estimates put its India net collection at approximately ₹185 crore after its first 10 days, with worldwide gross earnings crossing ₹250 crore.
The film collected ₹148.45 crore net in India during its first week and continued to draw audiences during its second weekend.
Those numbers are especially significant because Mirzapur was built as a streaming franchise rather than as an established theatrical film series.
Its transition therefore carried an unusual commercial risk.
The question was not simply whether fans still cared about Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit and Munna Tripathi. It was whether enough of them would pay for cinema tickets to watch characters they had previously consumed through a streaming subscription.
The box-office performance has provided a fairly convincing answer.
Part 2 Was Being Considered Even Before the Box Office Verdict
The sequel conversation did not begin only after ticket sales took off.
The filmmakers had already planted a potential path forward during production.
Mirzapur: The Movie includes a post-credit sequence pointing towards another chapter. More significantly, reports published shortly after release revealed that the makers had actually filmed two post-credit scenes.
Only one made it into the theatrical cut.
According to reporting citing an industry source, the second scene was deliberately held back for a possible Part 2.
That decision was made before the film's box-office performance was known.
It suggests that the creative team had already considered extending the theatrical storyline, even if commercial performance would ultimately determine whether doing so made sense.
The strong collections have now made that possibility considerably more realistic.
Has ‘Mirzapur: The Movie 2’ Been Confirmed?
Not yet.
This is the most important point for viewers following reports about the sequel.
There is currently a difference between sequel discussions and an official sequel announcement.
Reports indicate that the creative team and cast will meet Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani of Excel Entertainment to evaluate the next steps.
But no official announcement confirming Mirzapur: The Movie 2 has been made.
There is also no confirmed release date, production schedule or complete cast for a second movie.
Until Excel Entertainment formally announces the project, Part 2 should be described as under discussion, rather than confirmed.
Why the First Movie Worked as a Theatrical Experiment
The film had one advantage that most new Hindi releases do not: audiences already knew its world.
Pankaj Tripathi returned as Akhandanand “Kaleen” Tripathi, Ali Fazal as Guddu Pandit and Divyenndu as Munna Tripathi, bringing familiar characters from the streaming series into cinemas.
Rasika Dugal also returned as Beena Tripathi, while the film expanded the universe with additional characters, including Ravi Kishan's Babban Yadav.
Instead of simply continuing from Season 3, however, the movie moved backwards in the franchise timeline.
Its story operates within the period surrounding the first season, allowing characters whose later fates are already known to return to the screen.
That gave the filmmakers access to one of the franchise's biggest assets: its original ensemble.
It also created a storytelling problem.
A prequel-style narrative has to generate tension even when much of the audience already knows which major characters survive into later events.
Director Gurmmeet Singh has acknowledged that translating the streaming franchise into a theatrical event was a significant gamble.
The audience response suggests familiarity itself became part of the attraction.
₹180 Crore Matters for More Than One Film
The box-office result could have implications beyond Mirzapur.
Indian streaming platforms have built several franchises with large, recognisable audiences. But success on OTT does not automatically mean viewers will buy theatrical tickets.
Those are different consumer decisions.
A streaming viewer already paying for a subscription can watch a series at home. A theatrical spin-off asks that same person to spend additional money and time to see essentially the same fictional universe in a cinema.
Mirzapur: The Movie has shown that the conversion can work when the characters and franchise have sufficient audience loyalty.
That could make producers more willing to examine whether other established Indian streaming properties have theatrical potential.
It does not mean every successful web series can make the same transition. Mirzapur arrived with years of character recognition, memes, dialogue recall and an unusually strong fan culture.
The Franchise Now Has Two Different Futures
A second movie would also create an interesting structural challenge for Mirzapur.
The franchise now exists across two formats.
There is the original streaming series, whose fourth season remains in development, and there is the newly established theatrical branch.
According to current reports, Mirzapur Season 4 is continuing separately from discussions surrounding another movie.
That means a second theatrical film would not simply replace the streaming show.
Instead, Excel Entertainment would effectively be managing two connected narrative tracks inside the same franchise.
For viewers, that raises practical questions about chronology and whether future films will continue filling gaps in the existing timeline or eventually move into new territory.
No official details on the storyline for Part 2 have been announced.
Could Vijay Varma Return?
One of the early fan conversations surrounding another movie concerns Vijay Varma.
Varma played Bharat and Shatrughan Tyagi in the streaming series, and some fans have called for the Tyagi storyline to be brought into a second theatrical film.
Online speculation has also imagined a confrontation involving the Tyagi characters and Ravi Kishan's Babban Yadav.
For now, that remains fan demand rather than confirmed casting.
Neither Vijay Varma's participation nor the storyline of a second film has been officially announced.
This distinction matters because a successful franchise quickly generates casting rumours once another instalment becomes possible.
The Box Office Story Is Strong, but Not Completely Uncontested
Commercial success does not mean the movie has received universally positive reactions.
The film has benefited from the enthusiasm surrounding familiar characters and the opportunity to experience the Mirzapur world with a cinema audience. Reports have described enthusiastic reactions to character entrances and familiar dialogue.
At the same time, critical and audience reactions have not been uniformly favourable.
Writer and columnist Shobhaa De, for example, publicly criticised the film, taking issue with its storytelling, violence and aspects of its performances.
That contrast is useful when assessing the film's success.
Its box-office performance demonstrates considerable audience demand for the franchise, but ticket sales do not necessarily establish a consensus on the film's creative quality.
For Excel Entertainment, the commercial question is nevertheless difficult to ignore.
From OTT Hit to Theatrical Franchise?
That may ultimately be the larger story behind the sequel discussions.
When Mirzapur debuted as a streaming series in 2018, its success helped establish the appetite for Indian long-form crime dramas on OTT.
Eight years later, the same property is testing whether a digital-first franchise can become a recurring theatrical attraction.
The first film crossing ₹180 crore net domestically makes another movie commercially easier to justify.
But Part 2 would face a different standard.
The first film could rely heavily on the novelty of seeing Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu and Munna on a cinema screen. A sequel would need to prove that the theatrical version of Mirzapur has enough narrative life to continue after that novelty fades.
That makes the creative discussions involving Gurmmeet Singh, Puneet Krishna, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani particularly important.
They are no longer deciding whether Mirzapur can work in cinemas.
The box office has largely answered that question.
They now have to decide what story justifies bringing audiences back.
What Is Confirmed About ‘Mirzapur: The Movie 2’?
Confirmed / reliably reported:
Mirzapur: The Movie released theatrically on September 4, 2026.
The film has crossed ₹180 crore net in India.
Discussions around another theatrical instalment are underway.
Gurmmeet Singh, Puneet Krishna and members of the cast are reportedly expected to discuss the next steps with Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani.
A second post-credit sequence was filmed during production and held back with a possible Part 2 in mind.
Mirzapur Season 4 is being developed separately.
Not officially confirmed:
Final title of the sequel
Production start date
Release date
Complete cast

Whether Excel Entertainment has formally greenlit the movie
That distinction is important. The box-office success has made another movie increasingly plausible, but “Mirzapur: The Movie 2” is not yet an officially announced production.
