The removal of climate activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk from Delhi's Jantar Mantar has sparked a fresh political confrontation, with Opposition parties strongly criticising the Centre's handling of the situation. Several Opposition leaders described the police action as an attempt to curb peaceful dissent, while government authorities said the intervention was carried out to ensure Wangchuk received urgent medical treatment.
Wangchuk had been observing an indefinite hunger strike in support of demands related to alleged examination irregularities and broader education reforms. As his health reportedly worsened after several weeks without food, Delhi Police shifted him from the protest site to Safdarjung Hospital early on Saturday. Authorities stated that the decision followed medical advice and directions issued by the Delhi High Court to safeguard his life.
The removal quickly became a political issue, with leaders from multiple Opposition parties alleging that a peaceful democratic protest was disrupted instead of addressing the concerns raised by students and protesters.
