John Abraham Begins Work on ‘Guru’
Mumbai, September 21, 2026: John Abraham has started shooting for his next psychological thriller, Guru, bringing the actor together with director Ribhu Dasgupta for a mystery built around memory, perception and an increasingly uncertain sense of reality.
Principal photography on the project has commenced, with Danish Pandor, Arif Zakaria and Kitu Gidwani joining Abraham in the principal cast. Variety first reported the production development on September 16.
A subsequent Bollywood Hungama report on September 21 described Guru as the film's working or tentative title and reported, citing a source, that Abraham was shooting the project in London. The London location and tentative-title characterization therefore remain source-reported details rather than information independently confirmed in the broader production announcement.
What Is John Abraham’s ‘Guru’ About?
Rather than centring on conventional action, Guru moves Abraham into psychological-thriller territory.
The story follows a man who gradually becomes aware that something about his circumstances is wrong. His memories and his perception of reality begin to diverge, leaving him increasingly unsure about what is real and whom he can trust. Strange developments deepen that uncertainty as the boundaries between memory and reality begin to converge.
That premise places perception and unreliable memory at the centre of the film rather than treating mystery simply as an external puzzle.
Abraham explained what attracted him to the project, saying:
“Guru is the kind of story that stays with you long after you've read it.”
The actor said the uncertainty at the centre of the screenplay appealed to him, particularly the idea that losing trust in one's own memory also calls reality into question. He described the storyline as “layered, unsettling and deeply intriguing.”
Ribhu Dasgupta Returns to the Thriller Genre
Guru is directed by Ribhu Dasgupta, whose previous work includes Te3n, Netflix series Bard of Blood and The Girl on the Train. He is also attached to Section 84 IPC.
Dasgupta has described the world of Guru as “unsettling” and said he is attracted to material that offers depth in story, treatment and performance while challenging a filmmaker.
The director also revealed that he had wanted to collaborate with Abraham for a long time, with Guru ultimately becoming the project that brought them together.
The combination is notable because Dasgupta's previous credits have repeatedly explored suspense, investigation and psychological uncertainty, making Guru consistent with territory he has worked in before.
Danish Pandor Joins John Abraham in the Cast
The film also features Danish Pandor, who has gained attention through Dhurandhar, alongside veteran actors Arif Zakaria and Kitu Gidwani.
Details about the individual characters played by Pandor, Zakaria and Gidwani have not yet been disclosed in the reports reviewed. Their inclusion, however, establishes Guru as an ensemble mystery rather than a project built solely around Abraham.

A September 21 Bollywood Hungama report specifically highlighted JA Entertainment and Authum Entertainment when reporting on the project. It also noted Authum Entertainment's involvement in other upcoming productions, including Maria IPS and Golmaal 5.
‘Guru’ Adds to John Abraham’s Upcoming Film Slate
The psychological thriller arrives during a busy phase in Abraham's upcoming film schedule.
He is set to return as ACP Yashvardhan Singh in Force 3, the third instalment in the action franchise. The film also features Harshvardhan Rane and Tanya Maniktala and is directed by Bhav Dhulia. It is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on March 19, 2027.
Bollywood Hungama has also reported that Abraham will appear in Rohit Shetty's Maria IPS, playing former Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria.
Guru, however, offers a markedly different proposition. Instead of relying primarily on physical action, its announced premise puts Abraham's character inside a psychological mystery in which his own memories become part of the uncertainty.
When Will ‘Guru’ Release?
No confirmed theatrical release date for Guru has been announced in the reports reviewed.
With principal photography now underway, further information about the film's production schedule, remaining cast, first-look material and release plans is expected as the project progresses.
