Senior IPS officer Vishwas Nangre Patil, known for his bravery during the 2008 Mumbai 26/11 terror attacks and his motivational speeches to students and young aspirants, has become the center of a political controversy after a video of him praising the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) went viral.
The remarks were made during a public event organized by the Sakal Hindu Samaj. In the speech, Patil acknowledged the role of the RSS in social work and nation-building. After the video resurfaced, several opposition leaders questioned whether a serving IPS officer should publicly make statements that could be perceived as supporting a socio-political organization.
The controversy gained momentum shortly after Patil took charge as the Nagpur Police Commissioner, leading to criticism from opposition parties, who argued that civil servants are expected to maintain political neutrality. Some leaders demanded clarification over his comments, while others said such remarks could affect public perception of the police force's impartiality.
Supporters of Patil have defended him, stating that the speech has been taken out of context. According to them, his full address focused on values such as discipline, social service, national unity, and harmony rather than endorsing any political ideology. They also highlighted his distinguished service record, including his courageous role during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, where he was among the officers who responded to the crisis.
As of now, Vishwas Nangre Patil has not issued any public statement regarding the controversy. The incident continues to generate political debate across Maharashtra, with discussions focusing on the balance between a public servant's personal views and the expectation of institutional neutrality.
