Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has accused the BJP of using a fresh criminal case against senior party leader Azam Khan to steer political attention away from unemployment, inflation, corruption and law-and-order concerns in Uttar Pradesh.
His criticism follows the registration of an FIR by the Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Establishment over alleged irregularities in the sale of land belonging to the Uttar Pradesh State Haj Committee in Lucknow.
Khan, a former chairman of the committee and one of the Samajwadi Party’s most prominent leaders, is among five people named in the case.
Investigators allege that irregularities surrounding the transaction caused a loss of ₹2.08 crore to the state exchequer. Those allegations are under investigation and have not been established as findings of guilt by a court.
Yadav, meanwhile, has cast the case in explicitly political terms, arguing that the BJP government is using action against opposition figures to change the subject when confronted with questions about its record.
What the FIR Alleges
The case centres on approximately 60,000 square feet of Uttar Pradesh State Haj Committee land in Lucknow.
According to reports citing the vigilance investigation, the property was connected with plans for a Haj House. Investigators have alleged irregularities in the manner in which the land was sold and estimated a revenue loss of ₹2.08 crore.
The state government ordered an investigation into the transaction on May 3, 2024. The subsequent vigilance inquiry led to the registration of the FIR.
Along with Khan, the case names two former Haj Committee secretaries and private developers.
At this stage, the FIR records allegations that investigators will have to substantiate through evidence. The people named in the case retain the right to challenge those allegations through the legal process.
Akhilesh Turns the Case Into a Wider Attack on BJP
Yadav's response focused less on the details of the land transaction than on what he described as the political purpose behind the case.
The SP chief accused the BJP government of using the FIR to distract attention from issues that he argues have a more immediate impact on voters, including unemployment, rising prices, corruption and law and order.
He has also alleged that Khan and members of the minority community are being selectively targeted.
That is Yadav's political charge against the government, not an established fact about the motive behind the investigation.
The distinction is important because two separate questions are now driving the controversy. Investigators must establish whether the alleged irregularities in the land transaction occurred and whether the people named in the FIR bear criminal responsibility. The SP, separately, is questioning why Khan continues to face repeated legal action and whether politics influences that scrutiny.
Azam Khan’s Legal Troubles Remain Politically Significant
Khan has been a major figure in Uttar Pradesh politics for decades and one of the Samajwadi Party's most recognisable Muslim leaders.
His political influence, particularly in western Uttar Pradesh, means that legal action against him rarely remains confined to the courtroom.
He has faced numerous cases and investigations over the years, including disputes involving land and institutions associated with him. The SP has consistently argued that the number and timing of those cases point to political persecution.
The BJP and government authorities have rejected that position, maintaining that investigations and prosecutions are based on alleged violations of law rather than political affiliation.
The latest FIR therefore enters an argument that predates the Haj Committee land case itself.
FIR Follows Recent Enforcement Directorate Searches
The political temperature around Khan had already risen following recent Enforcement Directorate searches at locations linked to him, including Mohammad Ali Jauhar University.
The SP strongly criticised those searches as well.
Yadav questioned the focus on Khan while arguing that other allegations of corruption deserved greater scrutiny. His party portrayed the enforcement action as part of a wider pattern of pressure on political opponents.
The ED proceedings and the latest Uttar Pradesh vigilance case are separate matters involving different investigations. Their proximity, however, has reinforced the SP's attempt to present the legal actions as part of the same political pattern.
For investigators, each case will ultimately stand or fall on its own evidence.
The Timing Matters as Uttar Pradesh Looks Towards 2027
The dispute is unfolding as Uttar Pradesh's political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 Assembly election.
The BJP will seek another term in India's most populous state, while the Samajwadi Party is attempting to build on its opposition base by focusing on employment, prices, social representation and governance.
Within that contest, Khan retains significance beyond the cases against him. His long association with the SP and standing among sections of Muslim voters make developments involving him politically sensitive.
That helps explain why a vigilance investigation into a specific land transaction has quickly become part of a much larger confrontation between the state's principal political rivals.
For the SP, the case feeds its argument that opposition and minority leaders face selective scrutiny. For the BJP government and investigating agencies, the relevant question is whether there is sufficient evidence to support the allegations irrespective of Khan's political position.
Politics and the Investigation Now Run on Separate Tracks
Yadav's “diversion” charge is likely to remain part of the political debate, particularly as the next state election approaches.
The legal process has a narrower task.
Investigators will have to establish how the Haj Committee property was handled, whether rules were violated, whether the state suffered the alleged ₹2.08 crore loss and what role, if any, each person named in the FIR played.
Until those questions are tested through investigation and, where applicable, judicial proceedings, the allegations remain allegations.
The political argument is already much further advanced. Yadav has placed the case within his broader attack on the BJP government's record, while the continuing legal scrutiny of Khan ensures that the veteran SP leader remains a flashpoint in Uttar Pradesh politics.
