‘Awarapan 2’ Finishes Week One on a High

‘Awarapan 2’ has emerged as one of the notable Bollywood box-office performers of the season after sustaining audience interest beyond its opening weekend.

The film, which released theatrically on August 14, 2026, recorded an India net collection of around ₹113.50 crore by the end of Day 7. Its seventh-day collection was approximately ₹6 crore, showing that the film continued attracting moviegoers even after the initial weekend rush.

Worldwide, the film's first-week gross reached approximately ₹161.67 crore, according to reported box-office estimates.

Strong Opening Weekend Builds the Foundation

Much of ‘Awarapan 2’s’ first-week success was established during its opening weekend.

The film collected more than ₹81 crore net in India during its first three days, before maintaining comparatively steady business during the weekdays. By Thursday, its domestic total had reached ₹113.50 crore.

The Independence Day holiday period also provided a favourable theatrical window, helping generate strong initial footfall for the sequel.

Major Box-Office Milestone for Emraan Hashmi

The performance carries additional significance for Emraan Hashmi.

With ‘Awarapan 2’, the actor has recorded his first lead film to cross ₹100 crore net at the Indian box office, making the sequel his highest-grossing film as a lead star based on the reported domestic numbers.

The achievement is particularly notable because the film revisits a character closely associated with Hashmi's earlier career.

Nearly Two Decades After the Original ‘Awarapan’

‘Awarapan 2’ follows the 2007 film ‘Awarapan’, with Hashmi returning as Shivam Pandit almost two decades later.

The original film developed a strong following over time, particularly for its emotional storytelling, music and Hashmi's performance. That long-standing audience connection gave the sequel an established fan base, while also creating the challenge of meeting expectations surrounding a much-loved film.

The sequel has also generated conversation around its musical connection with the original, including new versions and the use of songs associated with the first movie.

‘Awarapan 2’ Takes Lead in Independence Day Box-Office Clash

The film arrived alongside Sunny Deol's ‘Batwara 1947’, creating a direct Independence Day box-office contest.

By the end of the first week, ‘Awarapan 2’ had collected approximately ₹113.50 crore net in India, compared with about ₹33.60 crore for ‘Batwara 1947’, giving the Emraan Hashmi film a substantial commercial lead.

The difference indicates that ‘Awarapan 2’ was able to convert its pre-release nostalgia and opening-weekend interest into stronger sustained theatrical demand.

Why the Strong First Week Matters

The film's performance demonstrates the potential value of reviving older properties when there is still a meaningful connection between the original film, its central character and its audience.

However, nostalgia alone does not guarantee long-term theatrical success. Sequels built around established films still need audience acceptance after the opening weekend. ‘Awarapan 2’s’ ability to remain above ₹6 crore on its seventh day suggests that its run was not limited entirely to initial fan-driven excitement.

At the same time, critical and audience responses have not been universally positive. Writer Bilal Siddiqi has acknowledged the mixed reactions and noted that the sequel deliberately takes a somewhat different tonal approach from the original.

That contrast makes the film's commercial performance particularly interesting: divided reactions have not prevented it from producing strong ticket sales.

Second Weekend Becomes the Next Test

After crossing ₹100 crore domestically and ₹160 crore worldwide during its first week, attention now shifts to how well ‘Awarapan 2’ holds during its second weekend.

Its first seven days have already delivered a significant commercial milestone for Emraan Hashmi. Strong second-week retention would further demonstrate that the sequel has moved beyond an opening driven primarily by nostalgia and established itself as a sustained theatrical success.
