Filmmaker Shakeel Noorani Arrested in Sexual Assault Case
Mumbai Police have arrested filmmaker and producer Shakeel Noorani following serious allegations made by a 33-year-old aspiring actor who has accused him of sexually assaulting her repeatedly over a period of four years.
According to police, Noorani, 73, was located at a farmhouse in the Mahabaleshwar area after authorities had been trying to trace him since the case was registered around 40 days earlier. He was subsequently brought to Mumbai and formally arrested.
A local court has remanded Noorani to police custody until August 12 as investigators continue examining the allegations and evidence connected with the case.
What Has the Complainant Alleged?
According to the complaint cited by police, the woman alleged that Noorani initially invited her to his residence in Mumbai's Malvani area on the pretext of discussing a film script or potential project.
She alleged that her drink was spiked and that she was sexually assaulted after losing consciousness. The complainant further alleged that after she regained consciousness, Noorani showed her an intimate video and threatened to circulate it if she informed her family or approached the authorities.
The woman has alleged that the purported recording was subsequently used to threaten her and that she was sexually assaulted on multiple occasions over the following years.
These remain allegations contained in the complaint and have not been established by a court.
Complainant Also Makes Miscarriage Allegation
The complaint includes further serious accusations. The woman has alleged that she was repeatedly given contraceptive pills following the alleged assaults and that she was poisoned, resulting in a miscarriage.
Police have booked Noorani under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including provisions relating to rape, causing hurt through poison, causing miscarriage and criminal intimidation.
Investigators will have to examine medical, electronic, forensic and other available evidence while determining the circumstances surrounding the allegations.
Police Traced Noorani to Farmhouse
According to police, Noorani could not initially be located after the FIR was registered. Investigators also searched his son's residence in Mumbai's Lokhandwala area but did not find him there.
Police eventually traced Noorani with the help of technical information to a farmhouse in the Satara district area near Mahabaleshwar. Local police assisted in detaining him before Mumbai Police took custody.
Following his arrest, Noorani was presented before a court and remanded to police custody until August 12.
Noorani's Lawyer Denies Allegations
Noorani's lawyer has rejected the accusations and maintained that the filmmaker has been falsely implicated. A detailed defence has not yet been publicly laid out, with the lawyer indicating that the matter is before the court.
The denial is significant because the allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial scrutiny. An arrest does not by itself establish guilt, and the evidence collected by investigators will ultimately be tested through the legal process.
