Indian-Origin Couple’s $20 Million Gift to Establish AI College at University of North Texas

A $20 million donation from engineers Anuradha and Vikas Sinha will fund a new college focused on artificial intelligence and advanced analytics at the University of North Texas, turning the couple’s connection with higher education in the United States into a long-term investment in students, research and faculty.

The contribution, reported in India as roughly ₹191 crore, will establish the Anuradha and Vikas Sinha College of Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Analytics.

Rather than directing the entire gift towards a single building or programme, the university plans to use it to create six permanent endowments. Those funds will support scholarships, faculty positions, research, emerging technologies, entrepreneurship and the leadership of the new college.

For Vikas Sinha, who earned his PhD from UNT after beginning his education in India, the gift also carries a personal significance.

“Education has opened doors for us throughout our lives, and we want to hold those doors open for others,” he said.

An Education Journey That Began in India

The Sinhas’ relationship with higher education stretches back to their years as engineering students in India.

Both studied civil engineering at Sri Venkateswara University before moving to the United States to continue their education. Vikas Sinha subsequently completed his doctorate at the University of North Texas.

Their professional careers eventually moved beyond their original civil engineering training, but education remained central to their story.

Now, decades after arriving in the US as students, the couple are directing part of their wealth towards the institution that became an important part of Vikas Sinha’s academic path.

He has also connected the donation to the experience of immigrants who arrive in the United States seeking educational and professional opportunities.

“For us, this gift is about paying that opportunity forward and recognising that immigrants don't simply participate in the American dream - they help build it,” he said.

The Money Will Extend Beyond the New College

The naming of a new AI college is the most visible result of the donation, but the structure of the gift could prove just as important.

UNT says six permanent endowments will be established through the contribution. That approach is designed to provide continuing financial support rather than exhaust the donation through short-term spending.

Scholarships will help fund students, while endowed faculty positions can strengthen UNT’s ability to recruit and retain specialists in fields where universities compete directly with technology companies and other research institutions for talent.

Separate support for research and emerging technologies should also give the college room to respond as artificial intelligence changes.

That flexibility matters in a field where techniques, tools and commercial applications can shift considerably during the time it takes a student to complete a degree.

Why Universities Are Building Around AI

UNT’s decision to create a dedicated college comes as artificial intelligence moves beyond the boundaries of traditional computer science departments.

AI systems and advanced analytics are increasingly used across engineering, business, healthcare, scientific research and other disciplines. That has created pressure on universities to rethink both what they teach and how they organise research.

The challenge is no longer simply to offer students a handful of AI courses.

Universities are also trying to develop researchers, build interdisciplinary programmes and prepare graduates to work with technologies that may change significantly during their careers. At the same time, they must address questions around responsible use, reliability and the impact of AI systems in professional settings.

A dedicated college gives UNT a structure through which those areas can be developed together rather than scattered across unrelated departments.

Scholarships Form an Important Part of the Gift

For the Sinhas, access to education appears to be as important as expanding AI research.

Their decision to include permanent scholarship funding connects the new college to the experience they have described as international students pursuing higher education in the United States.

The couple’s own path began with engineering degrees in India before continuing abroad. Their donation will now help finance students entering a very different technological environment.

That makes the gift more than an investment in artificial intelligence as an academic field. Part of the money is intended to determine who gets an opportunity to study it.

Research and Entrepreneurship Get Dedicated Support

The inclusion of entrepreneurship funding also gives the new college a remit beyond conventional teaching.

Universities have become important sources of AI research, but the route from an academic idea to a usable product or company can require a separate layer of support. Funding for entrepreneurship can help students and researchers explore commercial applications of their work.

Research funding, meanwhile, will allow faculty and students to investigate emerging areas without relying exclusively on individual short-term grants.

The combination of research, entrepreneurship and emerging-technology funding suggests that UNT intends the college to operate across several stages of the innovation process, from academic study to practical application.

A Long-Term Investment in UNT’s AI Ambitions

The scale of the Sinhas’ donation gives the University of North Texas substantial resources to expand its position in AI education, but money alone will not determine the college’s success.

Its longer-term standing will depend on the faculty it attracts, the programmes it develops, the research it produces and the opportunities available to students.

The permanent endowments provide a foundation for that work.

For Anuradha and Vikas Sinha, the donation also closes part of a circle that began with their own engineering education in India. The opportunities they found through higher education eventually helped shape their careers in the United States.

Their $20 million gift is intended to extend some of those opportunities to the students who follow.
