Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has stated that India will move forward with a trade agreement with the United States only if it offers the country a competitive edge and serves its national interests. Speaking on the ongoing trade negotiations, Goyal emphasized that India is committed to securing a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial deal rather than rushing into an agreement.
The minister noted that India's approach to trade negotiations is guided by the principle of protecting domestic industries while creating new opportunities for businesses, exporters, and investors. He said that any agreement should improve market access, strengthen supply chains, encourage investment, and enhance economic cooperation between the two nations.
Goyal also highlighted India's growing role in the global economy, stating that the country is negotiating trade partnerships from a position of strength. He reiterated that the government remains focused on ensuring that Indian businesses remain competitive in international markets while safeguarding the interests of farmers, manufacturers, and small enterprises.
Trade talks between India and the United States have continued over several key issues, including tariffs, market access, digital trade, and investment. Both countries have expressed optimism about strengthening economic ties, but officials have maintained that any final agreement must deliver tangible benefits to both sides.
