Dubai Airport Passport Renewal Takes Just Eight Minutes, Traveller Says
An Emirati traveller’s last-minute passport problem turned into a striking demonstration of speedy government service after he said his passport was renewed at Dubai International Airport in only eight minutes.
According to his account in a video that circulated online, the traveller was preparing to leave the UAE the following day when he realised his passport had only around one month of validity remaining.
That presented a problem because his destination required travellers to have passports valid for at least six months.
Instead of cancelling or postponing his journey, he was advised to use the passport renewal service available at Dubai International Airport.
What happened next surprised him.
He Expected 10 Minutes — It Took Eight
The traveller said he had been told that the Dubai airport service would be his fastest option and that the renewal could take approximately 10 minutes.
But according to his account, the process was completed even faster.
“I was told there was nothing faster than Dubai airport and that it would take 10 minutes. But I was surprised that it took even less, eight minutes, not 10.”
He subsequently praised the UAE authorities and the efficiency of the service.
The eight-minute processing time in this case comes from the traveller’s account shared in the viral video and reported by media outlets; it should not be interpreted as a guaranteed processing time for every passport renewal.
Why Did He Need a New Passport Before It Expired?
The incident highlights an important detail that can catch international travellers by surprise: a passport can technically still be valid but nevertheless fail a destination’s entry requirements.
Some countries require a passport to remain valid for a minimum period beyond the traveller’s arrival or intended stay.
In this case, the traveller reportedly had approximately one month remaining on his passport, while his destination required at least six months of validity.
That meant renewing the passport before travelling was necessary even though the document had not yet reached its expiry date.
UAE Expanded Early Passport Renewal Rules in 2025
The traveller’s experience also comes after the UAE expanded passport-renewal eligibility for Emirati citizens.
A policy that took effect on August 18, 2025 allows UAE citizens to renew their passports when they have one year or less remaining before expiry.
Previously, renewal was generally available when the passport had six months or less remaining.
The change was designed to make government services more proactive and reduce the possibility of citizens discovering shortly before an international journey that their passport does not satisfy the destination country’s validity rules.
More Than Just a Viral ‘8-Minute’ Story
The striking part of the story is the eight-minute turnaround, but the incident also carries a practical lesson for international travellers.
The expiry date printed on a passport should not be the only thing checked before a trip.
Travellers should verify the passport-validity requirement of their destination well before departure, along with visa, transit and entry conditions applicable to their nationality.
Requirements can differ by destination and may change, so travellers should rely on official immigration, embassy or government travel information rather than assuming that an unexpired passport is automatically sufficient.
UAE Passport Ranks Among the World’s Most Powerful
The viral incident comes as Emirati citizens continue to enjoy extensive international travel access.
According to the 2026 Passport Index by Arton Capital, the UAE held the top position in its ranking, with an overall mobility score of 182.
The index reported that UAE passport holders could access 138 destinations without obtaining a visa in advance and another 44 with visa on arrival, while 16 destinations required a visa before travel.
Passport rankings vary depending on the methodology used by different indexes, so these figures specifically refer to Arton Capital’s Passport Index.

Discovering a passport problem one day before an international journey could easily lead to a disrupted trip.
For this Emirati traveller, however, the problem reportedly ended with a new passport in just eight minutes.
