Trump Raises Possibility of Iran Connection
US President Donald Trump has suggested that Iran could be connected to the co-pilot accused of attacking Indian captain Smit Machchhar aboard an Israel-bound flydubai flight, adding a geopolitical dimension to an incident that remains under investigation.
Asked at the White House whether he had been briefed about a possible connection between the alleged attacker and Tehran, Trump said authorities were examining the matter.
“We're working on it right now,” Trump said. Asked whether information he had received pointed toward an Iranian connection, he replied that, based on what he was hearing, the answer appeared to be yes, while stressing that the investigation was continuing. Trump did not publicly provide evidence establishing Iranian involvement.
That distinction is important: an Iranian link remains an allegation or investigative possibility, not an established finding.
What Happened on Flydubai Flight FZ1073?
Flydubai flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion International Airport on September 30 when a serious security incident occurred in the cockpit.
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that the incident was brought under control and that the aircraft was diverted for an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. Some crew members were injured and taken for medical treatment.
Flydubai separately confirmed that the aircraft landed safely in Tabuk and that all passengers were safe. The airline said it was working with the relevant authorities.
Reuters reported, citing Israeli officials and passenger accounts, that the co-pilot allegedly stabbed Captain Machchhar during a struggle in the cockpit and that the aircraft rapidly lost altitude. Passengers and crew intervened, while reserve flydubai crew members who were aboard subsequently took control and landed the aircraft safely.
Indian Captain Smit Machchhar Praised for His Actions
Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, has been widely praised for his actions during the emergency.
According to accounts of the incident, despite suffering injuries, Machchhar managed to help enable others aboard the aircraft to intervene during the cockpit emergency.
India's Ministry of External Affairs said Machchhar received initial treatment in Tabuk before being moved to Abu Dhabi for continued medical attention and recovery.
His actions have drawn public praise from officials in India, Israel and the United States.
UAE Launches Formal Investigation
The UAE Attorney-General, Dr Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, has ordered a specialised Public Prosecution team to investigate the incident.
According to the Emirates News Agency, investigators are working with the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority and other authorities to establish the circumstances and motive. Importantly, the investigation will examine whether the incident was connected to terrorist activity or purpose, and whether there was any prior planning or external direction.
The Attorney-General also urged the public and media to avoid speculation and unverified information until investigators have gathered and verified the evidence.
As of October 2, no official UAE investigative finding cited here has established that Iran directed or participated in the incident.
Netanyahu Also Stops Short of Confirming Iran Link
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made claims about the alleged attacker's ideological radicalisation, but when questioned about an Iranian connection, he said it was too early to determine whether Iran or another outside actor was involved.
This creates an important distinction between political statements made after the incident and conclusions supported by the ongoing criminal and aviation investigations.
Why the Incident Matters
The episode has implications beyond the immediate safety of the passengers aboard FZ1073.
First, investigators will have to determine how such a violent cockpit confrontation occurred and whether existing airline screening, crew-security and operational procedures need to be reviewed.
Second, because the flight was travelling from the UAE to Israel, any evidence of external direction or terrorism could have broader security and diplomatic consequences in an already tense Middle East.
Third, Trump's suggestion of a possible Iranian connection significantly raises the political stakes. He warned that Iran would face a severe US response if investigators ultimately determine that Tehran was behind the attack.
But until investigators establish the motive, planning and any possible external connections, claims of Iranian responsibility remain unconfirmed.
What Investigators Still Need to Establish
Several central questions remain unresolved: the precise motive behind the alleged attack; whether the co-pilot acted alone; whether the incident was planned in advance; whether it constituted terrorism under the applicable investigation; and whether any government, organisation or other outside party directed or assisted the alleged attacker.
The UAE investigation has been specifically tasked with examining several of these questions.
For now, the strongest confirmed picture is narrower than some of the political claims surrounding the incident: flight FZ1073 suffered a serious cockpit security incident, the aircraft was diverted and landed safely in Saudi Arabia, Captain Smit Machchhar was injured, and authorities are investigating the circumstances and motive.
