Indian pilot Smit Machchhar has drawn widespread attention following a mid-air emergency aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
Machchhar was injured after being stabbed during an altercation with the co-pilot in the cockpit. The aircraft experienced a rapid descent before control was restored. A reserve flydubai crew travelling aboard the aircraft ultimately took control and safely landed the plane at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.
The circumstances and motive behind the attack remain under investigation, and flydubai has cautioned against drawing premature conclusions about what caused the incident.
Old Interview Reveals His Mother’s Initial Fear
Following the incident, attention has returned to an older podcast interview in which Machchhar discussed how he entered aviation.
He revealed that becoming a pilot had not originally been his childhood ambition. His mother was initially worried when he chose aviation as a career, reflecting the concerns families can have about the responsibility and risks associated with professional flying.
Machchhar's career eventually took him into commercial aviation. He previously worked for SpiceJet before joining flydubai, where he has served as a Boeing 737 captain since 2022.
From Career Uncertainty to a Mid-Air Crisis
The resurfaced interview has attracted particular interest because of the contrast between his family's early concerns and the extraordinary emergency he later faced in the cockpit.
Reports about Wednesday's incident indicate that Machchhar, despite being seriously injured, played a role in allowing others to intervene during the crisis. The aircraft was subsequently brought safely to Tabuk, where those injured received medical treatment.
Machchhar underwent treatment following the incident and was reported to be in stable condition.
Why the Story Has Resonated
The renewed interest in Machchhar's earlier comments adds a personal dimension to an otherwise alarming aviation incident. His story also highlights the unpredictable emergencies commercial flight crews can encounter despite extensive professional training.
At the same time, the precise motive and full sequence of events remain matters for investigation. Until authorities and the airline provide further findings, claims about why the attack occurred should be treated cautiously.
