The biggest Tamil cinema moment of the weekend happened thousands of kilometres from Chennai and nowhere near a film set.
At Britain's Silverstone Circuit, Vijay was seen moving quickly towards Ajith Kumar before the two actors embraced during the Michelin Le Mans Cup weekend. The exchange lasted only a few seconds, but it was enough to dominate conversations among their fans as videos circulated widely on social media.
The enthusiasm was easy to understand. Vijay and Ajith have spent decades at the top end of Tamil cinema, with their careers routinely compared and their fan bases often cast as rivals. Public appearances involving both men are relatively uncommon.
At Silverstone, however, cinema was not the reason they had come together. Ajith was there as a racing driver, while Vijay attended the event as a special guest and took part in the ceremonial start of the race.
A Warm Greeting at the Circuit

That interpretation needs some perspective.
Competition between Vijay and Ajith has been a major feature of Tamil popular culture, particularly among sections of their respective fan bases. The Silverstone footage is better understood for what it clearly shows: a warm public interaction between two longtime contemporaries.

The celebrity encounter risked overshadowing the event that brought them together.
Silverstone was hosting the fifth round of the 2026 Michelin Le Mans Cup championship, and Vijay attended as a special guest. He ceremonially waved the green flag as Indian drivers took part in the competition.
Ajith raced with Ajith RedAnt by Virage in the LMP3 Pro/Am category, sharing driving duties with French racer Romain Vozniak. His team finished 38th overall.
India's presence at the event extended beyond Ajith. Former Formula One driver Narain Karthikeyan and Aditya Patel were also among the Indian competitors.
For Ajith, the weekend was another stage in a motorsport programme that has become increasingly separate from his film career. Racing is not simply an occasional celebrity appearance for the actor; he has been competing internationally and developing his own team identity around the sport.
Ajith Thanks Vijay and Looks Towards India
After Vijay's appearance, Ajith thanked him for supporting the Indian contingent at Silverstone.
He also used the occasion to discuss something more ambitious: bringing international motorsport competition to India.
Ajith referred to Tamil Nadu's efforts to develop motorsport infrastructure and said the initiative represented “one small step by the Tamil Nadu government, one giant leap for motorsports in India.”
His remarks placed the Silverstone visit in a broader context.
India has produced drivers capable of competing internationally, but motorsport remains a relatively small part of the country's sporting landscape. Tracks, training opportunities, sponsorship and the cost of competition all shape how easily young drivers can progress.
Tamil Nadu already has a substantial connection with Indian motorsport, making Ajith's push for further investment particularly relevant to the state.
Why Vijay and Ajith Still Command This Kind of Attention
Few pairings in contemporary Tamil cinema carry the cultural history attached to Vijay and Ajith.
Both built enormous audiences over careers spanning decades. As their stature grew, comparisons became almost unavoidable.
