Apple’s iPhone 17 has suddenly become a much harder purchase to justify in India — not because the phone has become worse, but because its price has moved sharply in the opposite direction consumers normally expect from a year-old iPhone.
Apple currently lists the iPhone 17 with 256GB storage at ₹99,900 in India. That is ₹17,000 higher than its original launch price of ₹82,900 in September 2025, an increase of roughly 20.5%.
That creates an unusual question for anyone planning to spend around ₹1 lakh on an iPhone: should you buy the iPhone 17 now, or hold on for the standard iPhone 18?
The answer is less straightforward than in previous years because Apple has changed the rhythm of its iPhone lineup.
First, the important detail: the regular iPhone 18 is not here yet
Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18. The regular iPhone 18, however, was not part of that launch.
Apple’s Indian store currently lists the iPhone 18 Pro alongside the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17e and iPhone 16, but there is no standard iPhone 18 for sale. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at ₹1,64,900 in India.
Multiple reports say Apple is splitting its mainstream and premium release cycles, with the standard iPhone 18 expected around spring 2027. Apple itself has not publicly confirmed the standard iPhone 18’s launch date, specifications or Indian price, so those details should still be treated as expectations rather than established facts.
That distinction matters. Waiting for an iPhone 18 no longer means waiting a few days after Apple's September event. Buyers could potentially be waiting several months.
The iPhone 17 remains a strong phone
The higher price should not obscure what Apple put into the iPhone 17.
It has a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, an Always-On display and up to 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness. Apple also uses Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and claims three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation.
Inside is Apple's A19 chip, featuring a six-core CPU, five-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says the phone provides up to 30 hours of video playback.
The camera package is also significantly stronger than older non-Pro iPhones. There is a 48MP Fusion Main camera, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera and an 18MP Center Stage front camera. The main sensor can also provide an optical-quality 2x option, although buyers should remember that this is not the same as having the dedicated long-range telephoto hardware found on Apple's Pro phones.
The base model includes 256GB of storage, with a 512GB version also available.
In other words, the iPhone 17 has not suddenly become outdated simply because the iPhone 18 Pro exists.
The ₹99,900 price changes the calculation
The bigger issue is value.
When Apple introduced the iPhone 17 in India in September 2025, the 256GB model started at ₹82,900. Apple’s store now shows that same storage tier at ₹99,900.
Reuters reported that Apple raised prices across parts of its existing iPhone lineup in India following its September 2026 product announcements. For the base iPhone 17, the increase was nearly 21%. The report linked the broader pricing pressure to rising memory and storage costs amid strong AI data-centre demand for components.
That makes this an unusual upgrade cycle.
Normally, consumers considering a previous-generation iPhone after Apple's September event can expect its relative value to improve. This time, the official price of the iPhone 17 has increased instead.
Apple is offering purchasing incentives in India: its current financing page lists up to six months of No Cost EMI with participating banks and a ₹1,000 instant cashback offer for the iPhone 17 with eligible cards. Trade-in credit may further reduce the effective purchase price depending on the device and its condition.
But those benefits do not erase the underlying ₹99,900 sticker price.
What could the regular iPhone 18 offer?
This is where confirmed information ends and reported expectations begin.
Apple has revealed the A20 Pro used in the iPhone 18 Pro family. It is manufactured using a 2-nanometre process and introduces substantial improvements aimed particularly at graphics and on-device AI workloads. Apple has also introduced its next-generation C2 cellular modem system in the iPhone 18 Pro.
That does not confirm that the standard iPhone 18 will receive identical technology.
Reports about Apple's forthcoming mainstream model suggest a 2nm-generation A20 chip, increased memory and Apple's C2 modem could be among its upgrades.
Until Apple announces the device, however, specifications such as RAM capacity, exact processor configuration, camera hardware, battery life and display changes remain unconfirmed.
This is particularly important for buyers seeing confident-looking “iPhone 18 specifications” online. The existence of the iPhone 18 Pro does not make leaked specifications for the unreleased standard iPhone 18 official.
The AI question may matter more than benchmark speed
There is another reason the iPhone 17-versus-18 decision is different from older annual upgrades: on-device AI.
The iPhone 17’s A19 already includes Neural Accelerators in its GPU cores and supports Apple's current intelligence features.
But Apple's newly released A20 Pro demonstrates where its hardware strategy is moving. The company says A20 Pro includes a Dual 16-core Neural Engine with 32 total cores and double the AI processing capability of A19 Pro.
We cannot assume the regular A20 will reproduce those exact specifications. Nevertheless, Apple's direction suggests that neural-processing capability, memory bandwidth and efficiency are becoming increasingly important to the useful life of an iPhone.
For someone who typically keeps a phone for four or five years, that may make waiting more relevant than it would be for a buyer who upgrades frequently.
So who has the stronger reason to buy now?
The iPhone 17 makes more practical sense for someone who needs a phone immediately, wants a 120Hz ProMotion display without moving to the substantially more expensive Pro tier, and intends to keep the device for several years.
Its 256GB starting storage, A19 chip, 48MP dual-camera system and 120Hz OLED display mean it remains a modern flagship-class phone.
The hesitation is specifically about paying ₹99,900 for it.
Someone whose current phone is still working well has a different calculation. Waiting allows the buyer to see the actual standard iPhone 18 — its confirmed specifications, India price and availability — instead of making a ₹1 lakh purchase based partly on rumours about the next model.
There is also a third possibility that can be overlooked: watch actual transaction prices rather than Apple's official MRP alone. Retailer discounts, bank offers, exchange values and sale pricing can materially change the value equation. A substantially discounted iPhone 17 is a different proposition from an iPhone 17 purchased at ₹99,900.

It is iPhone 17 at ₹99,900 today versus an unreleased standard iPhone 18 at an unknown Indian price several months from now.
At ₹99,900, the iPhone 17 is ₹17,000 above its original ₹82,900 launch price. That makes patience more relevant for buyers who do not urgently need a replacement.
For someone who needs a phone now, however, waiting for an unannounced device also has a cost. The iPhone 17 already offers 256GB storage, ProMotion, the A19 processor, modern cameras and current Apple Intelligence support.
The critical point is to avoid treating rumoured iPhone 18 specifications as guaranteed upgrades.
Apple has already shown what its new generation can do through the iPhone 18 Pro. What the standard iPhone 18 inherits from that technology — and what Indian consumers will ultimately pay for it — remains the missing piece.
