A major development emerged on Tuesday in the case involving the alleged harassment, assault and sexual abuse of two minors in Bihar’s Jamui. According to police, Nandan Yadav, described as the key accused in the case, suffered a bullet injury to his leg during an alleged encounter while police were attempting to apprehend him.
He was subsequently taken into custody and shifted to a hospital for treatment.
The case came to light after a video circulated widely on social media. The footage allegedly shows a group of youths stopping and harassing a minor boy and girl.
As both victims are minors, their identities and any information that could lead to their identification are being withheld.
Nandan Yadav Shot in the Leg
According to reports that emerged on Tuesday, police were conducting an operation to apprehend Nandan Yadav, who was wanted in connection with the case.
During the alleged encounter, he suffered a gunshot wound to his leg. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and placed in police custody.
Initial reports do not provide the same level of official detail about every aspect of the operation. Therefore, the precise circumstances surrounding the alleged encounter should be treated as subject to further official clarification and investigation.
What Allegedly Happened on September 19?
According to police and media reports, the incident occurred on the evening of September 19.
Both victims are Class 10 students and attend the same coaching institute. They had travelled on a scooter towards the outskirts of Jamui and were allegedly stopped by a group of youths while returning.
According to The Indian Express, the two teenagers left after tuition at around 6:30 pm and went to a hilly area to take photographs. While returning, they were allegedly surrounded by a group of around seven to eight youths.
Police said the location is situated some distance away from the main Jamui-Lakhisarai road.
What Does the Viral Video Allegedly Show?
Clips circulated on social media allegedly show a group stopping and harassing the two teenagers.
According to police and media reports, the boy was assaulted, while the girl was allegedly subjected to inappropriate physical contact and sexual harassment. One individual has also been accused of attempting to grab the girl and take her away.
The allegations remain under investigation. Anyone detained, arrested or named in connection with the case must be treated as an accused unless and until guilt is established by a court.
Police Traced Victims After Video Went Viral
An important aspect of the case is that no police complaint was filed immediately after the alleged incident.
Jamui Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Dayal said police traced the victims using the registration number of a vehicle visible in the viral video.
According to police, the girl initially did not inform her family about the incident. Her family learned about it on the night of September 20, and her father submitted a written complaint on September 21.
Her statement was subsequently recorded at her home by a woman police officer.
SIT Formed, FIR Registered Under POCSO Act and BNS
Given the seriousness of the allegations, police constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT).
The SIT is being led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Deepti Monali. The FIR invokes relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police have also said that around seven suspects have been identified using the video, while raids are continuing to locate others allegedly involved in the incident.
What Is the Latest on Arrests?
On September 21, police said three suspects had been apprehended in connection with the case. Some reports described them as minors or juveniles.
A day later, on September 22, reports emerged that Nandan Yadav, described as the key accused, had been injured in an alleged police encounter and taken into custody.
As the investigation is developing rapidly, reports published at different times may refer to “three arrested,” “three detained,” or the subsequent apprehension of Nandan Yadav. These figures reflect different stages of the police operation.
Police Act Against Circulation of Viral Video
The investigation is not limited to identifying those allegedly involved in the assault.
Authorities have also begun taking steps to have videos of the incident removed from social media platforms. Since the footage involves minor victims, further circulation could seriously compromise their privacy and potentially reveal their identities.
Police have urged people not to redistribute such material.

According to The Indian Express, police are also examining whether a patrolling unit should have been deployed in the area at the time of the alleged incident.

Bihar State Women’s Commission Takes Cognisance
Apsara, chairperson of the Bihar State Women’s Commission, condemned the incident and said a commission team would meet the victim to gather information about the case.
Jamui MLA and Bihar Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh also condemned the incident and said the administration was taking action.
The case has also triggered political criticism, with opposition leaders raising questions over law and order in Bihar. The criminal allegations, however, will ultimately be determined through the police investigation and judicial process.
