India will head into their T20I series against Afghanistan with Jasprit Bumrah available for selection after the fast bowler received fitness clearance ahead of a busy stretch of international cricket.
Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy have also been cleared, giving India greater flexibility as they prepare for three matches against Afghanistan in New Delhi and the Asian Games later in September.
The update is not entirely positive for the Indian camp. Harshit Rana has suffered another hamstring injury and has been ruled out of both assignments. Vidarbha fast bowler Yash Thakur has been called up as his replacement.
Bumrah Cleared to Return
Bumrah's availability settles one of India's more important selection questions before the Afghanistan series.
The fast bowler had been awaiting final clearance before returning to competitive action. With that process completed, India can bring an experienced pace option back into an attack that has lost Rana to injury.
Bumrah's value in the T20 format extends across different phases of an innings. He can operate with the new ball, provide control when batters are looking to accelerate through the middle overs and take responsibility at the death.
That range will be useful against Afghanistan, whose experience in international T20 cricket makes the series more than a routine warm-up for India's subsequent commitments.
Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy Available
India have also received encouraging news on Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Both all-rounders have been cleared to return to the T20I setup, strengthening the options available to the team management when deciding the balance of the XI.
Sundar had been recovering from a hamstring problem. His ability to bowl in the powerplay while contributing with the bat gives India a different tactical option, particularly when conditions favour spin.
Reddy offers another route to balancing the side through his batting and seam bowling. Their availability should make it easier for India to rotate players during a demanding September schedule without substantially altering the structure of the team.
Another Injury Setback for Harshit Rana
Rana's absence is the more concerning part of India's latest fitness update.
The Delhi fast bowler suffered another hamstring injury during mandatory fitness-clearance testing at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence. He will consequently miss the Afghanistan T20Is as well as India's Asian Games campaign.
It continues a difficult period for Rana.
A hamstring tear before the T20 World Cup ruled him out of that tournament, and he subsequently missed the entire IPL 2026 season. After working his way back towards international cricket, another hamstring problem prevented him from taking part in India's tour of Zimbabwe.
The latest injury interrupts his comeback again and reduces India's pace-bowling depth just as the international calendar becomes more congested.
Yash Thakur Called Up as Replacement
India have turned to Yash Thakur to fill the vacancy.
The Vidarbha pacer has been named as Rana's replacement for both the Afghanistan series and the Asian Games. It is a familiar role for Thakur, who was also brought into the Indian setup when Rana was unavailable for the Zimbabwe tour.
Thakur made his T20I debut during that series and took four wickets in two matches.
That recent exposure to international cricket gives the selectors a replacement who is already familiar with the demands of the national setup rather than requiring an entirely new player to adjust at short notice.
Afghanistan Series Opens a Busy Run for India
The three-match Afghanistan series will be played in New Delhi, beginning on September 13.
India's schedule remains crowded after the bilateral contest. The team is due to face Japan in a one-off T20I before beginning its Asian Games title defence from the quarter-final stage on September 28.
The sequence of matches puts workload management alongside selection as an important consideration for the team management.
Bumrah's return provides India with greater control over that process. His experience means the team does not necessarily need to rely on him for the same role or workload in every match, while the return of Sundar and Reddy creates additional room for rotation elsewhere in the XI.
Bumrah's Return Strengthens India's Bowling Options
Rana's injury means India's fast-bowling resources will still need careful management, but Bumrah's clearance gives the attack an experienced focal point.
His ability to handle high-pressure overs also allows India's less experienced pacers to be deployed in more defined roles rather than being asked to cover every phase of an innings.
The Afghanistan series should now give India an opportunity to assess combinations before the Asian Games while also managing the workloads of players returning from injury.
For Bumrah in particular, the immediate priority will be returning to competitive cricket without placing unnecessary strain on his body during a tightly packed period.
India have therefore gained something more valuable than an additional name on the team sheet. They have regained one of their most adaptable bowlers at a point when injuries elsewhere in the pace attack have narrowed their options.
