Police Check Turns Into Highway Chase
A dramatic police operation in Tamil Nadu has drawn widespread attention after a head constable was filmed clinging to the roof of a speeding SUV while officers pursued suspected gutkha smugglers.
The incident occurred on Sunday, September 27, 2026, after police received information about banned tobacco products allegedly being transported from Bengaluru towards Coimbatore. Officers began checking vehicles on the outskirts of the city and intercepted a Karnataka-registered SUV carrying three men.
Head Constable Velmurugan Climbs Onto SUV
According to police accounts reported by The New Indian Express and The Indian Express, the SUV attempted to escape after officers tried to inspect it.
Head Constable M. Velmurugan of Kovilpalayam Police Station managed to grab the vehicle and climb onto its roof as it accelerated away. He then held onto the roof rails while the SUV continued towards Avinashi, with police vehicles pursuing it. An ambulance was also deployed as a safety measure.
Videos recorded during the pursuit subsequently spread across social media.
Three Men Arrested
The chase eventually ended near the Avinashi area after police teams managed to stop the vehicle. Three men, described by police as Rajasthan natives in their 20s, were arrested. Police said two sustained fractures while attempting to flee after the SUV was stopped.
Authorities also seized the SUV and a substantial quantity of gutkha and other banned tobacco products that police allege had been brought from Bengaluru for delivery in Coimbatore.
Reports Differ on Distance and Quantity
Some details remain inconsistent across published reports.
The New Indian Express reported that Velmurugan remained on the vehicle for nearly 30 km and that police recovered about 170 kg of banned tobacco products. The Indian Express described the pursuit as nearly 40 km and noted that reported estimates of the seized tobacco ranged from around 170 kg to more than 250 kg.
Until authorities provide a definitive consolidated figure, those numbers should therefore be attributed to their respective reports rather than presented as undisputed facts.
Why the Incident Matters
The footage has attracted attention primarily because of the extraordinary danger faced by the officer during the pursuit. It also highlights the risks police can encounter while intercepting vehicles suspected of transporting prohibited products.
At the same time, the viral nature of the footage makes factual context important. The three occupants were arrested in connection with alleged tobacco smuggling; allegations against them remain subject to the legal process.
