The Punjab government has made a significant policy shift by approving the implementation of the Centre's VB-G RAM G scheme after previously rejecting it in the state Assembly. The scheme, which replaces MGNREGA with an expanded rural employment framework guaranteeing up to 125 days of wage employment, officially comes into effect on July 1.
The decision has triggered political controversy, with Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal accusing the AAP government of making a "U-turn" and questioning why it reversed its earlier stand. Opposition leaders have demanded an explanation, arguing that the Assembly had unanimously opposed the legislation only months ago.
The Punjab government has stated that implementing the scheme aligns the state's rural development strategy with the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, while ensuring enhanced employment opportunities and higher statutory wage guarantees for rural households.
