England Replace India at the Top of T20I Rankings
India have lost their position at the top of the men’s T20I rankings, with England moving to No. 1 following a commanding 3-0 series victory over Sri Lanka.
England completed the clean sweep at Old Trafford in Manchester on Saturday, September 19, beating Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the third and final T20I.
The result pushed Harry Brook’s team above India in the rankings, continuing a closely fought battle between the two sides for the top position in 2026.
India’s fall to second comes despite their own recent success. Shreyas Iyer’s side completed a 3-0 home series sweep over Afghanistan earlier in September, but England’s results against Sri Lanka were enough to take them back to the summit.
England Seal No. 1 Ranking With Dominant Old Trafford Win
England left little doubt about the result in Manchester.
After being asked to chase just 125, the hosts reached 126 for two in only 9.4 overs, completing victory with 62 balls remaining.
Jos Buttler led the chase with an unbeaten 62 from 32 deliveries. Captain Harry Brook contributed 33 as England rapidly dismantled Sri Lanka’s modest target.
Earlier, Sri Lanka had been dismissed for 124 in 18.5 overs.
Pathum Nissanka scored 36 from 24 balls and Kamindu Mendis made 35 from 28, but the visitors were unable to build a sufficiently large total.
Sonny Baker returned figures of 2/17, while Jofra Archer took 2/23 and Will Jacks claimed 2/31.
The eight-wicket victory completed a comprehensive 3-0 series win for England.
England Dominated Sri Lanka Throughout the Series
The final result was consistent with England’s control of the three-match series.
England opened the series with a huge 119-run victory in Southampton before winning the second T20I in Cardiff by six wickets. They completed the sweep with another one-sided performance in Manchester.
The Old Trafford victory was also England’s 15th consecutive T20I win over Sri Lanka.
Brook finished as England’s leading run-scorer of the series and was named Player of the Series.
India Had Recently Regained the No. 1 Position
The latest change at the top continues an unusual rankings battle between India and England during 2026.
India entered the year as the leading T20I side and strengthened their standing by winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
However, England briefly replaced India at No. 1 in July after completing a 4-0 T20I series victory over the world champions in England.
That result ended India’s stay of more than 1,600 days at the top of the T20I rankings, a run that had begun in February 2022.
India’s absence from the summit did not last long.
Later in July, India won their first two matches against Zimbabwe in Harare to take an unassailable series lead and reclaim the No. 1 ranking from England. India eventually completed a 3-0 sweep.
The rankings battle has now swung England’s way again.
India’s 3-0 Afghanistan Sweep Was Not Enough
India entered September with another opportunity to strengthen their position when they hosted Afghanistan for three T20Is in Delhi.
The defending world champions completed a 3-0 sweep of the series.
However, England responded with three consecutive victories against Sri Lanka, and their results were enough to move them above India.
The development illustrates how ICC team rankings are determined by weighted results rather than simply by the outcome of a team’s most recent series.
Under the ICC ranking system, results from different periods carry different weight, meaning a team can win its own series and still lose ground relative to another side if its closest rival produces sufficiently strong results.
England’s Rise Under Harry Brook
England’s return to No. 1 also reflects an impressive run under Harry Brook.
The victory over Sri Lanka was England’s 23rd win in 26 completed T20 internationals since Brook took charge in 2024.
The team has combined an aggressive batting approach with strong bowling performances, while experienced players such as Jos Buttler continue to play important roles.
Against Sri Lanka, Buttler again demonstrated his value by controlling England’s chase at Old Trafford and finishing unbeaten on 62.
Brook, meanwhile, ended the three-match series with 170 runs and was named Player of the Series.
What the Ranking Change Means for India
India slipping to second does not change their status as the reigning ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions.
They successfully defended the title earlier in 2026, becoming the first team to retain the Men’s T20 World Cup and securing a record third title.
The rankings, however, measure performance over a broader period rather than determining the holder of a world championship.
That distinction is important: England now occupy the No. 1 ranking based on the ICC’s rating system, while India remain the reigning T20 World Cup champions.
With the two teams having exchanged the top position more than once in recent months, future bilateral results and ranking updates will continue to shape the order at the top of men’s T20I cricket.
