The 2026 FIFA World Cup final ended with Spain lifting the trophy after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time at New York New Jersey Stadium. However, the post-match ceremony soon became as widely discussed as the match itself after several Argentina players turned their backs while Spain celebrated their World Cup triumph during the trophy presentation.

Spain secured the title through Ferran Torres' extra-time winner in the 106th minute, claiming the nation's second FIFA World Cup crown. Following the final whistle, both teams collected their medals before the champions prepared for the trophy lift. According to multiple reports, Argentina's squad moved away from the main stage after receiving their runners-up medals instead of remaining to applaud the new champions, despite Spain having applauded Argentina during the silver medal presentation.

The atmosphere became even more controversial when Spain midfielder Rodri received the Golden Ball award as the tournament's best player, with sections of the crowd chanting Lionel Messi's name while Argentina players continued facing away from the presentation stage. The scenes quickly spread across social media, triggering widespread debate among football supporters worldwide.

Several football commentators strongly criticized Argentina's actions, describing the gesture as poor sportsmanship. Broadcasters argued that international tournaments should promote respect between finalists regardless of the result. Meanwhile, Spain midfielder Dani Olmo played down the incident after the match, stating that Spain preferred to focus on celebrating its achievement rather than reacting to the behaviour of the defeated opponents.

The controversy followed an already heated conclusion to the final. Argentina finished the match with ten players after Enzo Fernández was sent off late in the game, while Leandro Paredes later received a red card following post-match confrontations involving several Spanish players. The disciplinary incidents, combined with the medal ceremony controversy, overshadowed what had otherwise been a historic night for Spain's national team.

While opinions remain divided among supporters, many football observers believe moments such as these highlight the importance of sportsmanship on the biggest stages of international football. Spain's World Cup victory will be remembered for its disciplined performance and historic achievement, while Argentina's conduct during the closing ceremony has become one of the tournament's most debated talking points.
