Gulveer Singh Faces Another Medal Test in the 5000m
Gulveer Singh will return to the track on Tuesday, September 29, for the men’s 5000m final at the Asian Games 2026, with an opportunity to add a third medal to his campaign.
The final is scheduled for 4:45 PM IST. Gulveer will be joined by fellow Indian athlete Avinash Sable, giving India two representatives in the event.
The race carries added significance for Gulveer after he secured podium finishes in two different distances earlier in the Games.
Silver in the Men’s 10,000m
Gulveer won the silver medal in the men’s 10,000m final after clocking 28 minutes 29.38 seconds.
Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew took gold in 28:27.51, while Albert Kipto of Bahrain finished with the bronze medal in 28:34.38.
The result also marked an improvement for Gulveer from his bronze-medal performance in the 10,000m at the previous Asian Games.
Another Silver in the 1500m
Gulveer followed his 10,000m performance with another silver medal, this time in the men’s 1500m.
He recorded a personal-best time of 3 minutes 36.72 seconds.
Japan’s Kazuto Iizawa won gold in 3:36.35, leaving Gulveer just 0.37 seconds behind the winner. Japan’s Nagiya Mori claimed bronze with a time of 3:37.92.
Reaching the podium across different distances has underlined Gulveer’s consistency during his Asian Games campaign.
Why the 5000m Final Matters
The 5000m presents a different challenge from the events in which Gulveer has already won medals.
Compared with the 1500m, athletes must manage their pace and energy over a considerably longer distance. At the same time, positioning and finishing speed can become crucial during the closing stages of the race.
