Indian sprinter Haritha Bhadra secured the bronze medal in the women’s 200m final at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on September 27, delivering another podium finish for India in track and field.
Bhadra entered the final as one of two Indian athletes in the event alongside Unnathi Aiyappa Bolland. The women’s 200m final was scheduled for 3:55 pm IST, with Bhadra starting from lane five and Bolland from lane three.
Shanti Pereira successfully defends 200m crown
Singapore’s Shanti Pereira won the final to retain the Asian Games women’s 200m title she captured at Hangzhou 2022.
The victory also gave Pereira a piece of Asian Games history: according to The Straits Times, she became the first woman to win consecutive Asian Games 200m titles. Five male sprinters had previously achieved back-to-back victories in the event, but no woman had done so before Pereira. The Straits Times
Pereira had already taken silver in the women’s 100m at the 2026 Games. Combined with her 200m gold and 100m silver from Hangzhou, the Singaporean now has four Asian Games medals. The Straits Times
Bhadra had impressed on her way to the final
Bhadra's medal followed a strong performance in the earlier rounds.
In her opening 200m heat, she clocked 23.31 seconds to finish second and qualify automatically for the next round. Pereira won that heat in 23.10 seconds. Bolland also progressed after recording a personal best of 23.33 seconds and finishing third in her heat.
Both Indian sprinters subsequently secured places in the final, giving India two representatives in the medal race.
Another boost for India's athletics campaign
Bhadra's bronze came during a busy evening for the Indian athletics contingent, with athletes also competing in the women’s long jump, men’s 200m, men’s high jump, women’s 100m hurdles and women’s 3,000m steeplechase, among other events.
The result adds to India's track-and-field medal haul at Aichi-Nagoya after earlier podium finishes that included Sawan Barwal’s marathon silver, Tajinderpal Singh Toor’s shot-put silver and Prachi Choudhary’s 400m bronze. Olympics
For Bhadra, the bronze represents a significant step on the continental stage after reaching the final through a competitive field and converting that opportunity into an Asian Games podium finish.
