Gold and Silver Prices Remain in Focus
Gold and silver prices continue to command attention in India after another period of sharp movement in the precious-metals market. According to the latest benchmark rates published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), Gold 999 closed at ₹1,52,113 per 10 grams, while Silver 999 stood at ₹2,32,350 per kilogram.
For consumers, however, these benchmark prices should not be confused with the final amount charged at a jewellery store. IBJA specifies that its published rates exclude 3% GST and making charges.
Latest Gold and Silver Rates
According to the latest IBJA data, the benchmark rates were:

These are benchmark bullion rates and do not include GST or jewellery-making charges.
Gold 24K Around ₹1.52 Lakh per 10 Grams
The latest IBJA closing benchmark puts 999-purity gold at ₹1,52,113 per 10 grams. The corresponding opening rate was ₹1,51,136, meaning the closing benchmark was ₹977 higher than the opening level.
For 22-carat gold, represented by the 916-purity benchmark, the latest closing rate was ₹1,39,336 per 10 grams, compared with an opening rate of ₹1,38,441.
This distinction is important for retail buyers: 24-carat gold is higher-purity bullion, while jewellery is commonly sold in lower purities such as 22K and 18K.
Silver Climbs Above ₹2.32 Lakh per Kg
Silver also showed substantial movement. IBJA's Silver 999 benchmark was ₹2,29,318 per kg at opening and ₹2,32,350 per kg at closing, an increase of ₹3,032 during the benchmark session.
The movement is notable because silver's price behaviour can differ from gold. Apart from investment and jewellery demand, silver has significant industrial applications, which can expose it to a different mix of demand factors.
What Happened to Prices Compared With the Previous Benchmark?
IBJA's historical table shows Gold 999 at a closing benchmark of ₹1,50,785 per 10 grams on September 24, compared with the latest ₹1,52,113. That represents an increase of ₹1,328 per 10 grams between those two closing benchmarks.
Silver's movement was even larger. The Silver 999 closing benchmark shown for September 24 was ₹2,28,248 per kg, compared with the latest ₹2,32,350, a difference of ₹4,102 per kg.
These comparisons refer specifically to the IBJA benchmark series and should not be treated as the change in every city's retail jewellery rate.
MCX Gold and Silver Show Mixed Movement
Futures-market data showed a somewhat different picture. Commodity market data available around 12:48 am on September 26 showed MCX gold at approximately ₹1,50,700, down 0.10% from the previous close in the displayed contract, while MCX silver was around ₹2,34,515, up approximately 0.20%.
The difference between IBJA benchmark prices and MCX futures should not be interpreted as conflicting information. They represent different parts of the bullion market: IBJA publishes physical bullion benchmark rates, while MCX prices refer to exchange-traded futures contracts.
Gold Prices Have Been Volatile in Recent Days
Recent IBJA data underline how quickly bullion prices have been moving. Gold 999's closing benchmark was ₹1,53,337 on September 21, ₹1,52,136 on September 22, ₹1,52,016 on September 23 and ₹1,50,785 on September 24. The latest closing figure then moved back to ₹1,52,113 per 10 grams.
That sequence suggests that consumers should be cautious about describing the market simply as continuously “rising” or “falling.” Gold has instead been experiencing notable day-to-day fluctuations.
Why Jewellery Buyers May Pay More Than the Published Gold Rate
A benchmark of ₹1.52 lakh per 10 grams does not mean a buyer will necessarily pay exactly that amount for 10 grams of jewellery.
IBJA explicitly states that its published rates exclude 3% GST and making charges. Retail jewellery bills can also vary depending on purity, jeweller pricing, design and other applicable charges.
For example, a customer purchasing 22K jewellery should compare the relevant 916-purity rate rather than simply using the 24K Gold 999 benchmark.
What Buyers Should Check Before Purchasing Gold
Consumers comparing gold prices should check the purity of the product, price per gram, making charges, GST and the final invoice amount rather than relying solely on a headline 24K rate.
The city also matters. Retail rates can differ from benchmark bullion rates and can vary between jewellers. Economic Times' market data likewise describes displayed gold rates as indicative and notes that they exclude GST and other charges.
For readers tracking daily bullion prices, separating the IBJA physical benchmark, MCX futures price and retail jewellery rate provides a more accurate picture than treating all three as the same “gold price.”
