Ronaldo, Ramos and Di Maria Left Real Madrid After Contract Tensions — Could Vinicius Jr Be Next?

Vinicius Junior’s unresolved contract negotiations have created another major decision for Real Madrid. With the Brazilian star approaching the final year of his current deal, the situation recalls previous moments when high-profile players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and Angel Di Maria eventually departed after disagreements over contracts, salary or their futures at the club.

Vinicius Jr Contract Uncertainty Puts Real Madrid at Another Crossroads

Real Madrid have rarely allowed sentiment alone to determine the future of even their biggest stars. That philosophy is again attracting attention as Vinicius Junior and the Spanish giants attempt to resolve the Brazilian forward’s long-term future.

Vinicius is approaching the final season of his existing Real Madrid contract, which runs until 2027. Despite the importance of the winger to the club, an extension has yet to be finalized.

The situation does not mean Vinicius is certain to leave. In fact, Real Madrid remain confident about retaining him, while the player has previously spoken calmly about his future. But the longer negotiations continue without an agreement, the greater the uncertainty surrounding one of Madrid’s most valuable attacking players.

That uncertainty inevitably brings comparisons with previous Real Madrid superstars whose contract or financial negotiations contributed to dramatic departures.

Cristiano Ronaldo Showed That Even Superstars Can Leave Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure in 2018 remains perhaps the clearest reminder that extraordinary sporting success does not guarantee a player will finish his career at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ronaldo had already established himself as one of the greatest players in Real Madrid history when he joined Juventus. His exit followed a period in which questions surrounding his contract, salary and relationship with the club hierarchy became part of the discussion over his future.

His departure demonstrated a fundamental feature of Real Madrid’s management strategy: the club is prepared to move forward even after losing an iconic player.

That precedent is relevant to Vinicius, although the circumstances surrounding the two players are different.

Sergio Ramos Departure Offered Another Warning

Sergio Ramos provided an even more direct example of how difficult renewal negotiations can end a legendary Real Madrid career.

After spending 16 years at the club and becoming one of its most successful captains, Ramos left in 2021 when the two sides failed to complete a new agreement.

The defender later explained that by the time he was ready to accept the club’s proposal, the offer was no longer available.

His exit showed how deadlines and negotiating positions can become decisive, regardless of a player’s status or achievements.

Di Maria Also Departed After a Disagreement Over His Future

Angel Di Maria left Real Madrid for Manchester United in 2014, shortly after playing a crucial role in Madrid’s Champions League triumph.

Financial considerations and disagreement over his position and value within the squad formed part of the circumstances surrounding his departure.

Once again, Real Madrid demonstrated its willingness to reshape the squad rather than automatically meet every demand from an established star.

Why Vinicius Jr’s Situation Is Different

There are important reasons not to assume history will simply repeat itself.

Vinicius is 26 and remains at an age where he could potentially spend many more prime seasons at Real Madrid. He has already developed into one of the club’s leading attacking players and has delivered decisive performances on major European stages.

Recent reports indicate that Real Madrid still want him to remain at the club and believe an agreement can be reached.

Vinicius has also publicly projected calm over the situation. Earlier in 2026, he indicated that neither he nor the club needed to rush because his existing agreement remained valid until 2027.

The problem is that the calendar is becoming increasingly important.

Final Contract Year Changes the Negotiating Balance

Entering the final year of a contract creates a difficult strategic question for any club.

Real Madrid must decide how long it is prepared to negotiate before the risk of losing Vinicius for little or no transfer fee becomes unacceptable.

If he remains without a new contract deep into the season, the Brazilian could move closer to a position where clubs outside Spain could negotiate with him over a future free transfer.

For Vinicius, meanwhile, his importance to the team and proven record at the highest level give him considerable leverage in negotiations.

The challenge is finding financial terms that satisfy the player without forcing Madrid to abandon its wider salary structure.

Transfer Interest Adds Another Layer

The uncertainty has naturally attracted attention elsewhere in Europe.

Arsenal have been linked with Vinicius, although recent reporting has indicated that Real Madrid do not intend to sell him this summer and remain confident that a renewal will eventually be agreed.

Interest from other major clubs nevertheless matters because it gives Vinicius alternatives if negotiations with Madrid ultimately fail.

For Real Madrid, allowing the situation to remain unresolved for too long would potentially increase those external opportunities.

Mourinho Could Become Important to Vinicius’ Decision

Vinicius’ relationship with Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho may also influence how the situation develops.

The Brazilian has recently spoken positively about working with Mourinho, embracing the manager’s message about playing with enjoyment and freedom.

That sporting relationship could prove significant. Contract decisions at this level are not solely about salary; a player's role, relationship with the coach and confidence in the club’s sporting project can all influence whether an extension makes sense.

If Vinicius feels central to Mourinho’s plans, staying in Madrid could remain the most attractive sporting option.

Could Vinicius Really Follow Ronaldo and Ramos?

It is possible, but it is far from inevitable.

The examples of Ronaldo, Ramos and Di Maria demonstrate that Real Madrid will not necessarily change its negotiating principles simply because an important player is involved.

However, those departures occurred under different circumstances, and none provides a perfect blueprint for what will happen with Vinicius.

Both Madrid and Vinicius still have powerful reasons to reach an agreement. The club would retain one of world football’s most dangerous attacking players, while Vinicius would continue competing for major trophies at a club where he has already established himself.

The real danger comes if the current gap between the two sides proves impossible to bridge.

Why the Vinicius Negotiations Matter

The outcome will extend beyond the future of one player.

A new contract would signal that Real Madrid see Vinicius as a central figure in the next phase of the club’s sporting project. The financial terms could also influence the wage expectations of other elite players within the squad.

A departure, by contrast, would represent one of the biggest changes to Madrid’s attack in years and immediately create a major transfer story across European football.

For now, the situation remains a negotiation rather than an exit.

Real Madrid’s history proves that even legendary players can eventually leave when sporting and financial interests stop aligning. Whether Vinicius becomes another name on that list will depend on whether player and club can find common ground before the contract clock becomes the defining factor.
