Sarfaraz Khan Emerges as Leading Contender to Replace Injured Sai Sudharsan for Sri Lanka Tests: Report

Sarfaraz Khan has emerged as one of the leading candidates to replace injured batter Sai Sudharsan in India’s squad for the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka. Sudharsan has been ruled out with a toe injury, creating a vacancy in an Indian squad already dealing with fitness concerns ahead of the opening Test in Galle on August 15. Reports suggest Sarfaraz and Shaik Rasheed are among the players being considered for the vacant spot.

Sai Sudharsan Ruled Out of Sri Lanka Test Series

India’s preparations for the Sri Lanka Test tour have suffered another setback after Sai Sudharsan was ruled out of the two-match series because of a toe injury.

Sudharsan had initially been included in the squad subject to fitness clearance. His absence is significant because the left-hander had strengthened his case in the longer format with impressive performances for India A in Sri Lanka, including consecutive centuries.

With the 23-year-old unavailable, the selectors now have to decide who should be added to the touring group.

Sarfaraz Khan Among Frontrunners

Sarfaraz Khan has emerged as a prominent option for the vacant position, according to reports. Shaik Rasheed is also understood to be among the leading candidates being considered.

A call-up would provide Sarfaraz with another opportunity to establish himself in India’s Test setup after previously representing the national side in the longest format.

However, a place in the squad would not automatically guarantee him a spot in the playing XI. Devdutt Padikkal is already part of the touring squad and has strengthened his credentials with an unbeaten century in a warm-up match ahead of the series.

That means India could have multiple batting combinations available even after Sudharsan’s withdrawal.

Why Sarfaraz Khan’s Possible Return Matters

Sarfaraz has remained in the Test selection conversation because of his extensive first-class experience and previous opportunities at international level.

If selected, his inclusion would add another specialist middle-order option to a squad facing questions over its batting combination. It would also offer the team management greater flexibility depending on conditions and the balance required for the two Tests.

Sri Lankan pitches, particularly in Galle, can place considerable demands on batters as matches progress, making technique and adaptability against spin important factors in selection.

India Dealing With Injury Concerns

Sudharsan’s absence is part of a broader fitness challenge for India ahead of the tour.

Jasprit Bumrah has also been ruled out of the Sri Lanka Tests because of a knee problem, while India have had to manage fitness concerns involving several players during the build-up to the series.

The injuries have increased the importance of squad depth as India prepare for their latest assignment in the World Test Championship cycle.

Padikkal Could Complicate Playing XI Decision

While attention is focused on who replaces Sudharsan in the squad, Devdutt Padikkal has made a compelling case for a role in the XI.

His unbeaten century in the warm-up fixture provides the team management with an in-form alternative for the top order. Consequently, even if Sarfaraz receives the call-up, India would still need to decide how best to structure their batting order.

The competition could ultimately give the team greater flexibility, although the loss of an in-form Sudharsan remains a setback.

When Does the India vs Sri Lanka Test Series Begin?

India’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka begins in Galle on August 15.

The second Test is scheduled to start in Colombo on August 23.

Shubman Gill will captain India, with KL Rahul serving as vice-captain. The series represents an important opportunity for India to strengthen their position in the World Test Championship while testing their squad depth away from home.

Balanced Analysis

Sarfaraz Khan’s potential inclusion would give India an experienced domestic performer who already has exposure to Test cricket. His first-class background makes him a logical candidate when selectors are searching for batting depth.

At the same time, reports indicate that the replacement decision has not been limited to Sarfaraz, with Shaik Rasheed also in contention. Padikkal’s form further means that the eventual replacement may initially provide squad depth rather than walk directly into the XI.

For India, the larger concern is managing a growing injury list without disrupting the balance of the side. Sudharsan’s withdrawal removes an in-form option, but it also creates an opportunity for another batter to push his case during a challenging overseas series.
