Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that India's Northeast possesses immense potential to become the country's next major growth engine through sustainable agricultural practices and inclusive development. She highlighted that the region's abundant natural resources, fertile land, favorable climate, and rich biodiversity provide a strong foundation for expanding organic farming, horticulture, food processing, and agricultural exports.
Sitharaman emphasized that sustainable agriculture can improve farmers' incomes while preserving the environment and ensuring long-term food security. She noted that investments in infrastructure, better road and rail connectivity, modern storage facilities, irrigation, and digital access will play a crucial role in unlocking the region's economic potential.
The Finance Minister also underlined the importance of promoting local entrepreneurship, encouraging private investment, and creating value-added industries based on the Northeast's unique agricultural and natural resources. She said these efforts can generate employment opportunities, strengthen rural livelihoods, and integrate the region more closely with national and global markets.
According to Sitharaman, a balanced approach combining sustainability, innovation, and infrastructure development can help transform the Northeast into a key contributor to India's economic growth while ensuring that development remains environmentally responsible and inclusive.
